Another silly idea

While reading up on THT's I was thinking "Since corner loading yields the best results for a folded horn, could you design the mouth at the corner of the sub so it can sit parallel with the corner instead of at an angle?"

It'll require a total redesign, but would it work?

Well, the way I see it, why does the cab have to be angled?

If it's square into the corner, equidistant from both walls, it will still be corner loaded no?

Corner loading occurs when the mouth is less than 1/4 wavelength from the corner, irrespective of the cabinet orientation. An angled orientation will squeeze a couple more dB and Hz, which can be useful in pro sound. With a THT in a home the last thing you need to be concerned about is a couple more dB and Hz.

The cab would be square to the wall corners, but the mouth of the cab would aim right where the 2 walls converge.

This idea doesn't pertain to just the THT, although most living rooms have their furniture at right angles or parallel to walls.

Do you mean something like this???:
(brown is sub, dotted line is end of normal sub (so triangley bit is the new part) and black is the walls).

the hardest part of horn design is actually folding it into a box ;p

your suggestion would make folding more difficult.

Someone once said "anything that's worth doing is usually difficult", or something like that. What was his name?.... Oh yeah, Jesus.

Here's what I would do *brainstorming*...two boxes in one.

In order to get a full 7-10 foot long horn the box would have to be around 36" X 36" though. It would probably use 8" drivers or 10" at the largest.

It goes without saying its a lot easier just to make due with the designs we have already. Its questionable how much of a difference it would really make too.

There's no way the horn path on that would be long enough.

If you really just want something that looks square, build two of whichever of Bill's designs fit, put a Vplate on top, and false sides around the front to square it up. It will work quite well and look nice too. Or, just square up a single cab to the walls... there won't be much difference at all.

Umm, actually it would. If you really need THT extension it could be built larger.]

I personally wouldn't do it as it takes up too much floor space.

this thread is already off topic as per site rules, but ryan your design would be better suited to a tapped horn with 4x 8 inch drivers (or hell, even 4x anarchy 6s. you could fit a lot more horn path in there without the rear chamber, and a small mouth is NBD with a tapped horn.

I think I put a bug in Ryan and Brent's ear. The might turn into a full-fledged debate.

There's nothing to be debated...it would work and work well in concept.

Its not my place here to design horns though so all I can do is brainstorm with you.

As Bill has already said there's not much to be gained anyway.
