Another T39/DR250/WH8 review.

#1 Post by Grant Bunter »

This review comes about after my first foray into a non live music event, per se.

Featured artists:
Bam Bam, rapper from Melbourne
21 hundred, "Street Corner Poet - Hip Hop Troubadour - Brisbane's only Freestyle Rap Street Performer"

Local DJ's and rising street rap artists etc etc.

Rig was FOH:4 x T39's (2 x 2 V plated along the front of the main stage riser)/ 2 x DR250's
FB: 3 x WH8's/ 2 x POS 15's
And lighting.
Venue, Civic Centre main floor area approx 35 x 20 yards.

I've never worked such a gig before!
Everyone was cool mostly.

After much reading here in the forum of the requirements for DJ'ing/Hip hop and various styles of music in similar veins, I was a tad worried that I would lack in the bottom end.
Not so much in volume, but in frequency reproduction capability.
In the end I decided that I have what I have, and that would have to be enough.

After sound checking everyone in the afternoon, the night went smoothly.
The local DJ's were playing plenty of songs with bass drops the T39's seemed to handle with apparent ease. Same for the DJ backing Bam Bam.
21Hundred was using a loop creator with acoustic guitar/mike/his voice, and a Cahon, got the Cahon sounding very punchy and authorative.
The DR250's were crystal clear as always.

Not long back added another DEQ to run FB, at least on 2 of my FB sends.
Such a difference being able to hit the FBD button (only needed to do that for a dual female singing act) and it appears I sorted my gain structure issues with FB.

All in all, great to know my rig could handle these styles (Yes, sure, other subs may have gone lower, and I didn't measure content, but it didn't seem to miss much, if anything).

I also didn't run the RTA mike to measure SPL. But I couldn't have made it any louder! It's the closest to the edge I've taken my system, so it's time for more builds soon...
Built:
DR 250: x 2 melded array, 2x CD horn, March 2012 plans.
T39's: 4 x 20" KL3010LF , 2 x 28" 3012LF.
WH8: x 6 with melded array wired series/parallel.
Bunter's Audio and Lighting "like"s would be most appreciated...

Great review Grant! :-)

Did the client/s have any comments?

Building again eh. This doubling of cabs just to get another 6dB seems a bit of a harsh deal to me.
2xJ12L (3012HO) switchable/melded
2xT30

Words&graphics - Audio&Acoustics - Hardware&DSP; 3 different paradigms.

Yes Charles,
I got some comments from artists and the client, more are on the way, but here's a couple:

"Awesome sound and lighting last night at the BAM BAM and 21Hundred show Grant Bunter."

"That sounded f$#^ing incredible".

Pleased to say I know it wasn't drunk talk either, it was an all ages dry event.

Arrr yes, the building thing lol
Actually, I can sneek more than 6dB out of doubling my (sub) cabs if:
I buy premium drivers for the planned further 4 more cabs.
Due to higher voltage limiting I can expect maximum output to go up by 6dB compared to the BP loaded cabs, and 6dB from going from 4 to 8 cabs.
I'm going to build wider cabs too.
Add another pair of DR's, with CD's and all that should raise my ability to make the rig cruise rather than be at the bleeding edge...

That's just awesome Grant. Really happy for you. The upgraded rig will really be a killer, maybe one day ill get up to 8 cabs. I cant recall but have you herd the OT 12's? Id like a comparison review between them and the DR's 250's.

Once again great going!

I have a pair of melded array DR250's, based on the latest plans:

My forward outlook is to build another pair with CD's...

From the client:

"I just want to say HUGE thankyou to Grant for all the Audio and Lighting! It was a fantastic and well put together event with the sound being the best in town! Highly recommended to anyone needing sound! We have had a lot of feedback and the second most talked about thing was Grant and the sound. Bam and 21 both said "It was fun working with Grant and how professional he was on the night and how the good the sound was!" Thank you Grant and we will be using you again very soon.... Talk soon"

Sweet. Just another reason for me to stick with my decision to go with T39s. Great work Grant.

That's fantastic to hear you're snagging some gigs in your new locale, even better to hear that all involved were happy with the sound.

Looking forward to seeing your new build thread, just to clarify....

You're going to build an additional 4 T-39's - Wider and with the 3012LF or LAB12?

That is one serious rig you're creating Grant  :chainsaw: :chainsaw: :chainsaw:
Built 2 x T39 Lab 12 loaded 457mm wide, 29inch Wide Dual Lab 12 Loaded T60 and 2 x OTop 112 2512 Melded. Powered by N.I.TRAKTOR Pro 2.6 (2.6.1 has too many issues) TRAKTOR KONTROL S2 Crown XTi2000

Cheers TH.
Enough confusion lol
Yes, add 4 x new and wider T39's, probably lab 12 loaded (and consequently another amp)
Add 2 x DR250's with compression drivers (might go with another amp here too lol)

Maybe some other stuff as well.
This will only eventuate after current ongoing discussion with the Eminence source in Oz is completed.

That should be well enough for nearly everything thrown at me.
After that, back into spending dosh on lighting...

Oh, I was to ask, this is after your move? When one door closes another opens. So soon you will be king of the hill and all your efforts will bear fruit. :hyper:
The reason I asked about the OT 12's is I have a pair and was wondering how a sided by side listen vs the DR's would have been. If it was worth the extra effort to build them vs the OT's. But you definitely got the skills to build them, for me it looks like a PITA :)

pumpsfast,
Yes, 5 weeks after arriving here.
I don't know about king of the hill, there aren't many hills out here lol.

There's a couple of dB extra in the DR's I'm told, and while I imagine they take much longer to build than Otops, other than the nacelles, and the errors I made as per my build thread, there wasn't anything that, for me anyway, wasn't able to be achieved in the build, especially with the support of the forum...
