Roller paint finish lost images?
I was sorely tempted to bump a 5yr old thread but figured I'd be scalded for it. Does anyone know where the images are for this?

I'm trying to get a feel for what a textured versus non textured roller is and 'how it rolls' with the Tuff Cab UK paint product. Is it 'as good as' duratex / Warnex (?), though this is slightly moot since they are either not available or need to be imported to uk.
I noticed it comes in 2.5kg from Blue Aran. Didn't need to spend 15 quid on black spray paint yesterday, when I could roller a pair of jacks and half of gotham city with 2.5litres.

Re: Roller paint finish lost images?
Charles,
A non textured roller: walk into a paint store or hardware and pick up a regular paint roller, it will say something like 10mm nap on the packaging.
If you use this with texture paint (which is simply thicker than ordinary paint) it will still leave a very slightly textured finish.
Obviously with ordinary paint, this roller will leave a quite smooth finish, much as you would expect to see on a wall.
Ask the sales people for a textured roller if they have one. It kinda looks like fairly open weave steel wool.
This allows peaks to be made while rolling on the textured paint, which dry to give the textured finish.
If you get this roller loaded up with paint, a light roll will produce larger peaks.
Just to remind you, there's a pretty good angled shot of textured finish in my T39 build thread.
I used a "fine" grade textured roller with textured paint to achieve that, 2 coats.
If you're unsure which way to go for you, maybe buy one of each type of roller, experiment a little on scrap wood, and see wht you like best
Hope this helps...

Thanks Grant.
. I will have to experiment I think. I've never heard of textured rollers - all I've used before is standard 'wool' large decorating rollers and mini foam (disposable) rollers. Thanks again.

I've been saved!, from researching 'paint rollers explained; nap or foam'. Blue Aran do a mini textured foam roller specifically for rollering Tuff Cab.

Tuffcab is basicly the same as Warnex / Duratex. Lots of speaker builders in the UK, and never heared anyone complain about tuffcab.
The roller you linked is just a normal textured roller, only slightly more expensive then you would have em in your local hardware store. They also come in half that size, roughly 5cm, nice for the small surfaces between mouth bracing in subs.

Life is just a game, don't take it to seriously!
Re: Roller paint finish lost images?
I've successfully used the cheap disposable foam rollers that come with a cheap flimsy tray that is about 15 to 18 cm wide/long. I found them at the "value" store.

Re: Roller paint finish lost images?
I'll look into getting both sizes of textured roller from t'internet. The thing that occurs to me (and most previous builders) with the jacks is that the vent port needs roller painting before it is assembled, or it can really only be sprayed or brush painted afterwards. I'm thinking of some 5mm wide and 25 or 50mm wide low tack masking tape so I can leave 5mm clear wood areas for the adhesive and the wider stuff to cover up finish-painted surfaces after painting, then the adhesive doesn't get on the finished surfaces, but neither is it on the wood in the regions where it needs joints. A bit detailed, but do-able - I haven't seen detail of how anyone else duratex'd the ports to get the same texture over all the painted surfaces.
EDIT: Hi Tom, ...well, I have some of the standard mini foam rollers already, so a test is in order.

Re: Roller paint finish lost images?
I have used coarse foam rollers for textured finish (usually yellow foam). Worked fine for me. Cannot find pics of what I used right away.
Do not use this kind of foam roller:

Neither this:

It should be coarse like the last one, but without the honeycomb pattern. I found it doesn't need to be a big roller like you would use on walls. The smaller rollers work fine for me (but I haven't done the likes of T60/T48).

Re: Roller paint finish lost images?
Thanks Anton. I've been thinking about the jack ports and wonder if one of these would work. A 0.9" wide roller.

It's hard to reconcile the £'s cost and the model making concept with speaker building (and it may not give the same texture), BUT, it will get into where an ordinary roller won't, and it will maintain a wet paint line, all meaning straightforward pre-prep & assembly and better surface finish continuity.

Re: Roller paint finish lost images?
It will not give much texture. I have just brushed paint everywhere I could not reach with the roller.
You may want to buy a wider small coarse roller and cut a small piece off, like 1"-2". Not sure if that works, but it would give you the same texture in places like inside the horn mouth.
