I never really documented my last Titan build a few years ago. I regretted it because the experience was very rewarding for me.

I'm out to build 8 more Titans. Hopefully I'll have these done by February, but that's a tough call. Wont be able to get started until after Christmas and NYE because I have Family gatherings, and shows. But fingers crossed.


Anyway, this is the start of the build thread. 8x at 24.5" (23.5" Internal panels to maximize plywood usage). 3015LF's, standard handle holds, steel perf grills over the mouths, dual recessed Speakons on the rear. Standard issue Titans.

I still have the old plans where the access panel was on the top, I requested the update and have been looking it over. How do people feel about the panel on the front? Which did you prefer?


For plywood, I have been having a very hard time finding suitable material after the Arauco plant burnt down. Baltic Birch is a couple mortgage payments for me, so I had been holding off. I hit my local hardware store the other day, he had 22 sheets of Arauco in house, 2 were damaged. I bought all 20 at a decent price, but when he reorders... $47.99 a sheet. So looks like I better enjoy my T48 build thoroughly until wood comes down again.

Wow, so that brings your total number up to 19 T48's or 16? Thats a LOT of noise you'll be able to make..

From an engineering POV, I'd take the top-load over the front-load arrangement as long as the driver permits. From what I can see dimensionally, which side the driver loads in from has been the only change.

Total number is 16. My original 3 were sold to a member on here a while back.

The idea is to have more systems in more places rather than one big system. The capacity will be a reality, but I'm not doing anything to warrant 16cabs (Yet!).

What specific advantage does the top load have over the front? For me its aesthetics.

Maybe Bill can chime, but I assumed the new loading was to facilitate the LAB offerings. It also seems like it makes air leaks less likely due to the driver chamber no longer having an access panel.

Controlling deflection of the panels that make up the horn throat and keeping the access panel as small as possible. I'd wager that performance is ultimately not affected or it wouldn't have been published, but why stack the deck out of favor if you happen to have the old plans?

Whenever I get around to building T48's for myself, I'll stick with the top-load design. I'm just picky like that.

i like the front loaded plans for service needs. esp on slim cabs, damn near impossible to get the driver anchors out in my 18 top loaded.

I like the looks of the front load. But from a building perspective I found the top load easier.

I've only built the front load model, but from a service point of view, front load is the way to go. All the fasteners are easily accessible, and it's easy to check for coil rubbing.

With the top load, you have to work blind for half of the fasteners, not to mention wrestling the speaker into place and blindly getting all the fastener holes lined up right.

Having only built the T39 front loaded, I have to agree that front loaded seemed like it was much more manageable than top loading would have been

+1 - however I have modified the front access panel flanges to be cut out of one piece ( with a rectangular hole ) with panel 6 extension glued to it - made for quicker and easier assembly.
