Wireless Microphone Issues......

#1 Post by ontime1269 »

I have these two Wireless Microphone systems:

I use them plugged into one of these:

I really like these systems for the compact size and they have a pretty nice tone but I do have an issue with them. Normally when my microphone is not in use at a gig, I turn off the transmitter to save the battery. However, On these units, as soon as I turn off the transmitter, the AF Clip light immediately comes on and I get a HUGE amount of steady static. It's easy to work around by sliding the switch to mute on the transmitter or just leaving it in the on position but I just find it odd that something like that would happen. The only other items in the signal chain are a Crown XTI 1000 & 2000, Toshiba Qosmio X500-S1811 Laptop, T-39, and a speaker designed by forum member Ewetho & Steve Reiger. Anyone have any ideas about what could cause that static? At first, I wondered if it could be the wireless or bluetooth signals from my laptop but turning those off did nothing.

When you turn off the transmitter the receiver can only pickup static...that's what you are hearing.

Used to happen to me when the preacher would leave his lapel mic on, stick it in his pocket then go to his office during the second service that he wasn't preaching....we'd mute his channel, then have to go tell him to turn it off. Getting too far away is the same as just turning it off. No signal...

A good wireless unit should mute it's output when the RF level goes below a certain point. The depends on you a) having a good wireless unit and b) setting the squelch properly so that when you shut the mix off the receiver is not able to find a signal strong enough to open the muting functions.

It's possible that there is a TV station on the same frequency which is holding the squelch open. While the WMS40s sound pretty good, they aren't frequency agile, so you're kind of stuck with the problem if this is the case.

When the time comes to upgrade, the Audio Technica 3000 series is nice, and can be had at very reasonable prices from distributors.

The GTD wireless systems do OK, but the transmitters haven't proven to be super durable... but for the price (and the price of replacement transmitters, they're probably one of the best deals on the market. You can get a dual diversity frequency agile set (2 transmitters and 2 diversity recievers) for less than $250... close to the same price as those AKGs.
99% of the time, things that aren't already being done aren't being done because they don't work. The other 1% is split evenly between fools and geniuses.
