WH10 Old vs. New

#1 Post by Haysus »

I have 2 WH10 old design crossfire array and 3 new design premium driver with the melded array.
I have been using both styles in shows this past month. I have noticed minor differences in the sound of the 2 boxes.

For the test I used an Audix OM2 vocal mic running thru SAC. The channel strip EQ is flat. The pics show the output EQ I found to sound natural vocally at the highest gain before feedback. The new melded arrays seem to be a lot hotter than the older crossfires. Both have really good output across the spectrum. Obviously the new premium drivers have more output.

The first pic is the new style melded array WH EQ curve and the second is the old WH EQ curve. This is going to be my start baseline from now on. Just an observation the new arrays need -30db cut centered around 2k. It's nice to know if I need more I can have. The boost at 120hz is to taste and not reflected as a major dip in the cab. I often boost or cut 120hz show to show depending on content and accoustics.

Un EQ'd these things are monster loud. As some people complain they sound boxy when not tamed wih EQ the musicians that pay my bills dictate what the wedge sounds like. With the baseline EQ that I have made the boxes sound as any Pro commercial wedge would sound. But have many more benefits. First, 250 watts @ 8 ohms is all you'll need ever. Second they are lighter than any wedge I have ever seen with the same output. Third is price. I would easily compare these to wedges to ones I have mixed on that retail for $900+.

Also have a pair of the new wedge 10 designs and they are awesome. When artists bring their own sound guys to mix them the first thing the artists tell them "Please pull the monitors volume down" as they are used to cranking their lousy monitors so high. These things will blow peoples heads off their shoulders...

Enjoy them :D
