Freud 50-118 Top Bearing Flush Trim Router Bit - vibration

#1 Post by But it Hertz »

I have this router bit: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B002IP ... 01_s00_i00

But it seems like it is out of balance. None of my other bits cause vibration.

I just received a replacement bit and it is just the same.

The vibration causes the router (Dewalt DW618) to wonder around.

Is this normal or is there a bad batch? For $35 and the Freud name I'd expect pretty much perfection!

Do the other bits have a top bearing, as well?

....and how much are you trying to cut with it in a single pass?

This is before I even try using it to cut!!! I'm talking about "just revving it up in free air"... NOT cutting wood!

It feels like I might be doing the router harm by running it. If you let it go it wanders across the bench!

I have a mixture of cheap & nasty & Freud. Some have bearings on top, others at the bottom. They all seem OK.

Yeah. It has to be! I'll try another brand for this type of cutter. I like Freud, but only because the do good saw blades IMO.

I'm pretty much flying blind as far as the router bits go.

I'm like that: I find a supplier or brand that I like and stick with them for years!

Frued typically is good stuff, from what I've heard. YMMV.

Scoot the shaft farther into the collet. And it's a Dewalt.

I put the bits all the way in and then back out 1/16 inch as per the Dewalt instructions. I think I just need to try another manufacturer of bits.

Have you run those others AFTER the Freud? If not, I would do that. You may just have a bit of crap in the collett somewhere putting the bit a few thou out of centre. At the high revs of a router, that will make it wobble.

Also it just may be coincidental that the bit change has struck the time the DeWalt Router bottom bearing is showing wear.

Plus it's 1/4 shank with a very long cutter. They tend to chatter if you crowd them or are removing quite a bit of material. If your dewalt has a 1/2 collet, buy nothing else. Huge difference.

Sorry about the previous post, my tool snobbery was showing. I just hate the yellow stuff.
