T18 in a car - What would be a good crossover / Eq to use?

#1 Post by But it Hertz »

Hello All, first Post!

I just completed my fist build... well I say completed. It's alive & just needs finishing!

Anyhow. It makes lots of noise. Nice and clean. But I'm having trouble setting it up.

I have this head unit. http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B006B1 ... 04_s00_i00 and was hoping to get away with using the internal Low Pass Filter. But Noooooo, it sounds terrible.

I'm have a choice of 55Hz, 85Hz, 120Hz. Not sure of the shape of the cut off. 55Hz sounds nicest but it still sounds very forced.

I fed the sub a frequency sweep from 10Hz to 150Hz over about 20 seconds just to see how it would sound. I haven't measured it but it did sound very up and down with definite loud spots!

At the moment I have it setup in my office until I can coax a decently balanced sound out of it.

Any suggestions for an automotive crossover / equalizer / amp package?

I was just reading around. The Mini DSP looks interesting. Any thoughts?

I am not sure you can use a mini dsp in your car. And sounds like a rather expensive solution to your problem.

Why dont you make a passive low pass for the woofer @ say 100hz. Passive should not be a problem as you are probably not going to give it kilowats of power. Many, even cheap, car amplifiers have some filtering build in. You might want to look into that too.
Life is just a game, don't take it to seriously!

Sure you can use a MiniDSP in your car - it has everything you need and more.. Its so easy to set up HPF and LPF on each channel and you got all sorts of different options on EQ depending on the plugin you pick.. I've used minidsp for several projects and its an amazing little tool.. If it only had a limiter built in, it would be a perfect tool!

Yeah, I might have to get a minidsp just to get it out of my system. I have come too far to cheap out on the last bit of this project. Waiting for HK to wake up.

Changing the subject quickly Michael, what's that interesting looking red box in your avatar?? Got any better pictures?

Its a Boominator, one of several i've built the last few years.. Its primarily built for Festivals, Roskilde Festival here in Denmark specifically. Its a bipolar reflex design that is very efficient and uses a small tripath amp for super long battery life :)

This cab in particular was made with solar panels on top for added battery life and was a huge success at parties.. I sold it in the spring to fund other projects, but I might be building a new one the coming spring for next summer :)

That is so AWESOME!!

I have been thinking about something exactly like that for festivals and camping.

How does it sound? What is the bass like compared with say, a T18?

Got any plans or construction pictures I could plagiarise from? I might consider doing one myself :)

Hi, and welcome to the forum!

Congrats on your first build. You're half way, if you plan to put the finishing touches on it.

Hard to say but, you might be experiencing room modes and nodes.

For the auto, it would be best if you got a dedicated subwoofer amp that puts out about 125 watts at 8 ohm ( which works out to 500w at 2 ohm).

Soooooo. I just discovered the world of REW and took this completely meaningless SPL chart of my sub using my laptop internal mic.

Image

Got a couple of days reading to do before I purchase an SPL meter that has calibration files available, but I reckon I'm on the case.

This thing might massage my ears yet!

The graph certainly backs up my feeling that is was loud - quiet - loud again during the sweep.

Time will tell.

P.S. I live under a flight path and on a main road. It's difficult to get a proper reading.

Just ordered a miniDSP and "2 way crossover advanced 2.1" plug in. Looking forward to getting my hands on it! :hyper:
