My XF212 Build

#1 Post by MrMike »

I completed my pair of XF212s yesterday morning, just in time for a gig. (Upon arriving at the gig yesterday afternoon, I learned that the gig was, in fact, today. :wall: Sometimes I'm such a dork.) Here are a few pics of the process.

Since we live in an apartment, I didn't get the chance to really put them through their paces before the gig so I was kind of flying blind. I have to say that I haven't heard myself this well since I quit using a full stack years ago, except now I can do it with much less stage volume. The sound guy loved it and I got several glowing comments from the guitar players with some of the other acts on the bill. The tone was rich and detailed, with some nice bottom end oomph without being too boomy. It would be an understatement to say that I'm thrilled with them.

All in all, the build went very well, considering that it was my maiden voyage. I made a couple of rookie mistakes, but nothing insurmountable. Most of all, I had tons of fun doing it and may very well do some more in the future.

Hey! Why call yourself "such a dork"? You just built two fine cabs! How do I know? You said so, and so did several other guitar folk...and the sound man.
Congrats!

Drivers are WGS Veteran 30s, which are their take on the Celestion Vintage 30. They've made the upper mids a bit smoother than the Celestion has and they sound fantastic. Great speakers for the money. Better yet, I picked these up on Craigslist, still in the boxes for less than half price.

Nice. Not a lot of xf's around. Guitar players are just stuck in the mud of the 50's and 60's.
If it's too loud, you're even older than me! Like me.

I'm already loving them, and I've had a few friends asking some questions about them. I didn't want to take the 'slap together a box and toss some speakers in it' approach. I sure am glad I waited to find something with a more intelligent design. I did make them 1" deeper to accommodate the 5.3" depth of the speakers. Although I really don't have a legitimate need for them, I'm almost considering building some more just for the experience of doing it. The sickness has begun.

Build a pair of Jack 12's. Then you'll have some nice "Jack of all Trades" speakers in case something comes up.
T39 - Dual BP102 23"
AutoTuba
J12 x 2 - Deltalite 2512
O12 - Dual BP102
