PL Premium or PL Premium 3X? New Label???

#1 Post by ripNdeb »

My area seems to have run out of the PL I'm used to using:

This is all I could find locally the other day:

Any difference? New label? Let me know what's up after a frustrating shopping experience. Thanks,
Dana :)

Pretty much answered my own question after some more research - new label, same stuff. There's an 8X version that appears to have a little grit to it and is thicker with more ooze out and harder to work with. If anyone can add to this it might be helpful. thanks,
Dana

The 8x sets up faster however it does not expand as much. It is also like concrete and in that is a negative as its not easy to remove from cabinets when you are finishing the outside. Stick with the 3x.

Me too. In my town, Home Depot and Lowes are on opposite sides of an alley. I went to HD, no PL Premium to be had at all. Went over to Lowes and there's this other stuff I'd never seen before. Out of frustration, I bought it anyway. Got home and used it, and hey! It's still the same old stuff! Thanks marketing department.

Thanks guys: I was faced with the same problem when I went to get more.
I even bought two more types of "PL", a water-clean up type, and what appears to be "the original"
All three types seem to work equally well for sticking things together and plugging leaks.
I bypassed the ~ $8/tube "8X-stronger". Amusingly, the price seems to scale with the "X-factor" on the tubes :P

Any other experiences with the water clean up type, which is much easier to use, but
cannot stick together previously finished surfaces? (Note on tube)

This should only be a problem when repurposing previously finished as I did in my construction.
You can see a scrap used as a brace painted red, to the left of the PL tubes.

My guess is that the solvent in the non-water based PL penetrates most finishes

Might as well get the best one (8x). Its $2 extra per tube...totally worth it imho if it really is that much stronger.

Not if it's less flexible and doesn't expand as much. The mechanical strength of standard PL is more than enough to hold the cab together (and then some). For that matter, Elmer's wood glue can do that just about as well. It's the flexibiltiy and expansion (read, gap filling) properties of PL that make it recommended.

PL8x must be rebadged PL pro....I have used that before....best left for braces and flange covers....regular PL for everything else. Although not enough "better" for me to use again.....dont need the extra 5x of strength...3x is damn tough when cured.
2x T39, 1x T60, 1x THTLP, 1x AT(not built by me) 6x DR250
