Hey up!

#1 Post by steelcityuk »

Hi.

I'm Steve from the steel city in England. I stumbled across this place after a google search, I was looking for something different subwoofer wise for my car. Over the years I've had a variety subs, some bought and some self built, bandpass, sealed, ported and a custom design by Erskine Fenty. My favourite speakers up to now are a pair of TDL Studio Ones that I don't use anymore - I'd like to but it wouldn't be long before the neighbours complained, so I now play music mainly in the car or on the iPod. Following a good read of the forum I've decided to take the plunge and ordered the Auto Tuba, I don't know if it'll be what I'm looking for because I'm not entirely sure what I'm looking for but I'm open minded and the price is right so let's give it a whirl and see.

Regards.

Steve.

Welcome to the forum Steve. What kind of car have you got and have you thought about the driver yet? The JBL is a popular choice for the price.

I think you are going to like that Autotuba in your car Steve. I sure miss mine - doesn't fit the current set of wheels properly. Must fix that with the next car purchase. Unfortunately the current one is a Toyota, so that may take a while :owned:

Welcome on board and enjoy the ride!

Thanks for the welcome.

The Auto Tuba is for a Citroen XM. Currently it's got a 13" Focal in the boot in a sealed enclosure of unknown capacity, despite the speakers reputation it's pretty poor which i think is down to the enclosure, I prefer the sound from a small Bazooka tube I've got in the back of my Prius. I was looking around at box designs when I came across this site and thought a small speaker in a big enclosure that sounds interesting.

I've noticed the JBL being recommended in one or two postings, maybe it will be the easiest to get hold of in the UK. A few years ago you could buy Eminence drivers from Maplins but I don't think they stock them any more.

Pretty sure you"ll like the autotuba. I've ran dual 8's, dual 12's, single 10, single 15, all in various sealed and ported configurations over the last 23 years. The autotuba is what I use now and is my favorite so far. It is the cleanest sounding cabinet I've heard in a car. Hope you enjoy yours too!

Welcome to the man that calls a boot a bloody boot. Auto tuba sounds great.

You might be able to fit a TAT into the Prius underfloor boot compartment , raising the level but leaving you with some space for groceries.
BAT10, Bad Auto Tuba. Reverse folded TAT to fit JBL 1014D, 350W driver, voltage limit unknown.

It's called a trunk because that's what it originally was, literally:

Next we'll be onto Bonnets and Windscreens...

I've got the plans - thanks Bill! So I'll have them printed off and look around for the items needed. MDF is very popular here for sub enclosures so I've done a search of the forums and thrown up various threads on using MDF or not. Unless ply is very expensive I'll stick with that. The decision needs to be made whether I build the usual type or the 'high' type.

Currently I've no plans to alter the Prius, it sounds OK for what is a very simple modification that can be unplugged and put into the rear footwells if I need all the boot space. Being an active Bazooka fitting was easy with a harness kit. You don't come across many Bazooka tubes in the UK, maybe SAS have on going dealer problems.

I can pick up 5 layer no lamination plywood for around £13 for an 8'x4', you shouldn't have a problem in Sheffield.

They have bigger problems than dealer problems with products like this.
At least they sound good.

OK, how did they end up with "Hood" then (which us colonials call a "Bonnet" )

Where are you getting that from? I can never tell if what places stock is good enough for what I'll want-Ridgeons gave me a quote of £42 for a sheet of 12mm 9ply Latvian Birch BB B
