A new BFMer from Houston

#1 Post by Bryce »

I figured I should introduce myself after lurking for awhile.

I've been in charge of sound for my dad's classic rock, blues, and country cover band since 2007. Lately, we've been renting out the sound system, my and my brothers(Lighting) services. A few gigs ago, I realized just how inadequate my Peavey PR15s and JBL JRX118SPs were. A client turned me on to BFM when he brought a Jack 10 for his bass guitar. It certainly looked unconventional to me at the time.
I’ve designed and built a few ported/sealed subwoofer enclosures for car audio and home theater applications, so I was looking into building a pair of Titan 48s first, then some Omnitops to go with them.

Last week, Mike Sprague put up a herd of T48s with Kappa Pro 15LFs for sale, and I HAD to go get them. After listening to his jacks with compression drivers, I’m pretty sure I’ll end up building some. These T48s are awesome! I’m thinking about having a listening party in Tomball where I can actually turn them up past 1/4 volume.

I’m using a Presonus 16.4.2, Driverack PA, and QSC RMX 1450 to drive the titans.

Other hobbies of mine include turbocharging cars, car audio, home theater, unicycling, and computer games.

G'day Bryce,
Welcome to the forum! :hyper:
Good to hear you've stopped lurking lol.

How big was the herd of T48's you bought?
You should have got the plans too, so you'd already know where to high pass them etc.

Otops I'm told are good quality, relatively quick and easy builds.
I've gone the DR way myself, building now!

I like your Dad's band music genres, can't get the guys in my band to do any country, but we do blues and classic rock...
Built:
DR 250: x 2 melded array, 2x CD horn, March 2012 plans.
T39's: 4 x 20" KL3010LF , 2 x 28" 3012LF.
WH8: x 6 with melded array wired series/parallel.
Bunter's Audio and Lighting "like"s would be most appreciated...

Welcome to the forum!

May I suggest going with melded array piezo tweeters instead, since more of your audience will be off to the sides. The melded array has a 120 degree horizontal dispersion, versus standard designs which typically run from 60 (Yorkville horn)degrees up to 90, depending on the style.

4 24" monsters. I think they weigh a little over 100lbs each, but I had no problem stacking them by myself.

Oh yeah, I bought all the plans a few months ago, so I have all the info. If I don't make up my mind on which tops to build soon, I'm going to have to build the THTLP. I'm still undecided between the DR250 and Otop12/15, but the OT12s are looking like a good idea right now.

Country isn't exactly my thing, but I enjoy running the mixer no matter what the music.

I have yet to hear a melded array. I was going to listen to Bruce's (That one letter difference is killing me, lol), but couldn't make the 3 hour drive at the time. I didn't get a great feel for the dispersion of Mike's compression drivers because we were limited on space, but they did sound good. If the melded array sounds that good (Or better?) and has wider dispersion compared to compression drivers, I'll definitely use them, because many of the venues we play don't require long throws. :)

Cheers!
We have an amazing country (doesn't everyone say that about their own country?)! It varies widely. Seemingly in no time at all in some places. Well worth a visit.

We do have a different accent... but I reckon you'd understand us lol

And if you came over here, I would make time to go trip around New Zealand as well. Awesome place! Also well worth a look.
It would only add a couple of days to your trip...
(I'm so gonna get toasted over that little line)
Seriously, a couple of weeks there would be good.
The Kiwi's have a different accent as well, even different from ours...

As far as your tops:
I'm building DR's, DR250's in fact (a pair). I consider my self slightly above novice in woodworking.
So far this build has been fine. It has already taken a good deal of time and I'm no where near done.
This isn't said to put you off, rather, if you're in a hurry to get the gear out gigging yesterday, then don't think a DR build is quick.
I believe Leland at Speakerhardware will pre build (melded) piezo arrays. That can save some time for any build, but costs more.

Ideally, if you build 4 cabs, you would build 2 with melded array and 2 with flat piezo array or CD's, with the melded array on the bottom of each stack. That lets you have wide dispersion up close and long throw as well...best of both worlds for those gigs requiring it.

4 Otop 12's and 4 T48's, killer rig!

That one letter different line killed me too Bruce :)

Us Texans say we have a great country. When doing so, we're usually referring to the country of Texas. :cowboy:

I made the trip to listen to Bruce's setup on Saturday. His setup sounded great.

The next day I took the T48s out to a field to have some fun. It was then I realized just how terrible my PR15s are compared to Otops. I stacked the 48s in a V arangement, without a plate. They hit 130db at 55hz at 1 meter according to my RS meter with my limiter set to 36 volts. I didn't get to check the actual voltage because I forgot my multimeter. I can't imagine how loud these things would be V-plated into a corner. Hearing protection definitely required.

I'm going to cut my teeth on an Autotuba for my GF's little brother before I start building the Otops. I'm going to do as Grant suggested, two melded and two straight arrays.

Welcome.

I haul my full rig to Houston in January. I'll post something in the "Come Here Them" section just after the new year.
