What's going on in here?
Hello All!
So, I found this place somehow and Ive been up late doing research on these designs for about a week now. Ive decided Im going to build an A/T for my Crown Vic.
This is so awesome! Before, I was going to setup a 10" or 12" sealed unit and need more money for the driver and amp. Would've needed more power to the trunk and I was worried about my civilian alternator keeping up at idle especially at night so I was looking into upgrading to the Police alt. ($$$) There are other reasons for that so I will likely do it anyway but now I dont feel like I have to wait for that to get done.
OF Course this takes up more room and will not fit where I wanted the sealed unit but its not like I don't have the room. Can't have everything. Worst case and I need the room I can pull it anyway. I am going to have to figure out how to keep it held in one spot, too. But, thats for later.
Ive decided on these parts:
JBL GTO804 driver
Blaupunkt THA-1250 amp (which is discontinued it seems, but on closeout in several places)
Duratex it with the trial kit. Should be enough, right?
I went to get the wood today, and had semi good luck. The third place I tried didnt have Baltic Birch, but knew what I was talking about and could order it. Unfortunately only before 5 and by the time I got there it was 5:30. I go again tomorrow and get it ordered.
He said it comes in 5x5 sheets, does that sound right? One is enough, correct?
Unfortunately, I also remembered today that the jigsaw and circular saw I had been planning on using were stolen a few months ago. So, I am going to have to get some before I can build it.
If this works out, I want to build a 2.1 setup for my room, which is small. Its 12'x12' so I was thinking the SLA Pro would work for monitors and another A/T for a sub. What do you guys think?

Welcome to the forum. The autotuba is very impressive for a single 8" driver (or a 10" or 2- 8"s). The sound quality is amazing and it get pretty loud with relatively low wattage.
Yes Baltic birch comes in 5x5 sheets and I'm pretty sure you only need 1 sheet (it's been a while since I last built an AT).
SLA pros will kill in a room that size. Not kill like "cool, it's a party" -- Kill like your guts shake out of your body, your eyes bleed, and then they dig a hole and bury you- AND your friends and relatives.
Think smaller, like regular SLAs. And mate it up to a Table Tuba to really impress.

I thought the SLA Pros were smaller. I dont have the SLA plans yet, so Im just going off the pictures.

Re: What's going on in here?
SLAs and TLAHs use smaller (think cheap here) 3" to 5 1/4" woofers and 1/2" dome tweeters which produce great imaging and still very LOUD, but not on the scale of the pro drivers used in the SLA Pros. Actually any cabinet on this forum would ROCK a 12x12 room.

Oooh, okay.
Yeah, I pretty much figured I would be under under utilizing pretty much anything in this size room.

Re: What's going on in here?
Do a table tuba for the home theatre. My BAT ( refolded tall AT ) absolutely slams in the car thanks to the cabin gain. In the lounge it doesn't reach quite low enough for full effect in the movies.
Then there's THT, or should that be TNT? See the youtube section.

Re: What's going on in here?
12x12 might actually get you into cabin gain. Bill gave me some numbers on a thread I started about that but I forget them. I just remember no venue fits but 12x12 is very small.

Re: What's going on in here?
I thought I read somewhere it was around 16' was the cut off. Im assuming thats square.
Got the Baltic Birch ordered today. Cost me $39.38 for a 1/2x5x5 sheet. This is going to take me longer than I thought due to the missing tools which Ill have to reacquire. They left the table saw so I have that but I need the rest of it. Thinking about getting a router too while Im at it. Eh, we will see.

Re: What's going on in here?
If you wanted to build SLA Pro's, you could also build them half size like another member on the forum did with good results. Here is a thread about them:

Re: What's going on in here?
So, I Im going to need another sheet of BB. I kept going back and measuring. Looking at it some more, measuring some more. Couldnt decide if the TAT would fit. I finally decided to make a mock up of a full width 18" (single 8") TAT.
Drawing the wood usage out, Ive found that unless I use 13 inch panels max Im going to run out of wood with a TAT. So if Im going to buy another piece of wood, I might as well go max panel width, eh?
Funny side note. I was driving around today with the mockup in the trunk and seen someone I knew, so I made a quick turn into a parking lot and did a 180 to pull back out behind them. At some point during this maneuver, the box hooked on the child safety trunk release, and pulled it enough to cause my trunk to pop open. Embarrassing making a stop and having the trunk lid try to keep going. Going to need to figure out a way to keep it (the real one) from moving around so much. Maybe Ill use the rest of the wood and make like a divider that sits down in the trunk and keeps everything tight.
I think I like it. If I put it upside down, itll be pointing right over the shelf at the back seat. Muhahaha.Drawing the wood usage out, Ive found that unless I use 13 inch panels max Im going to run out of wood with a TAT. Re: What's going on in here?
Hi, good luck with your build. Man I wish I had as much trunk space as you! Here's my autotuba in my trunk:

They really rock!
I don't think you will have to worry about the autotuba moving around too much. With all the internal folds it's a heavy box. If you were to carpet the box with matching trunk fabric (parts express sells it) friction alone will keep it in its place. I also have a HO alternator (240 amps) like you mentioned. They don't produce squat for amperage on idle. You have to bring up the revs to about 900 - 1200 rpm before they produce any power. An overdrive pulley and new belt can fix that issue. Just thought you should know if amperage at idle is your main concern.

Re: What's going on in here?
Yeah, rewound alternators suck. The police 200A unit was built from the ground up as a high-output alternator, though. It is almost twice as deep as the civi alt and It has 8 diodes vice the normal 4. The rotor is so heavy they had to put a One-Way clutch in the pulley so when the trans shifts the rotor will overrun instead of slipping the drive belt.
I was thinking about doing duratex on it. Your right though, it will be much heavier than than the mockup. But the way I drive sometimes...
I guess Ill just have to see if it becomes a problem.

It would work better if it was pointed at the back, or to the side/rear, for max gain.colt45ws wrote: I think I like it. If I put it upside down, itll be pointing right over the shelf at the back seat. Muhahaha.

Re: What's going on in here?
Could do that too. I dont see why I couldnt hurt to try several configurations to find the best position.Tom Smit wrote:It would work better if it was pointed at the back, or to the side/rear, for max gain.colt45ws wrote: I think I like it.
