How about a design for a boombox?

My music-loving daughter is in college and could use some decent portable high fidelity. It would be also nice if it incorporated space for an amp, player, etc. I could use one too for the workshop or some tunes while working in the yard.

You really think you can hear stereo separation from a boom box with the speakers a foot apart?

Agreed, you'll only get stereo from a traditional boom box from extreme near field listening that in a yard or shop isn't practical. In fact the traditional boomboxes really are comb filtering machines in their design. For a dorm room a small mini stereo would be perfect or for high fidelity a couple of powered DJ/recording monitors. For a dorm party or hanging out with friends, one or two jacks would surely rock the place.

Stereo only exists with at least three feet of separation, and beyond a listening range of twelve feet even that wouldn't be heard as stereo.

There are some boom boxes though that have the ability to detach the speakers and separate from "the box". You could find a design for tiny bookshelves with single full range driver, and hang them on the sides of "the guts".

I'm gonna get creamed for this here, but my wife got herself a Beats By Dre Beatbox for tailgating. She got tired of lugging the Jack10 and the heavy battery around. It was $350 and some change after a discount. I would have preferred her wait for the Big Jambox, which has a built in battery, but she loves the Beatbox. She moves it around the house while she's cleaning or in the bathroom when she's getting ready, etc.

I think it sounds muddy as hell, but she's always been the type to have ported 18"s in her Honda Accord whereas I'd put a couple of 8s in my Tahoe.

I still have my red and black Jack, though I'm thinking of painting it white and putting a grill on it for the 3 beach weddings I have booked this fall.

I'm with her...if you want a portable boombox, go buy a boombox. They are cheap enough where its not really worth it to go and try to build one.

If you need something that would normally cost you a lot more, like a good home theater system or pro audio system, then it makes more sense to build it yourself. Just my opinion

This is a boombox I built last year, its a derivative of a DIY boombox design made by a guy on another forum.. Sometimes the boomboxes you can buy just don't cut it.. This is made for use at festivals etc where power is nowhere to be found, so I used a small TA2020 amp for battery efficiency..

I built it for Roskilde Festival here in Denmark and just sold it to build a new one for this years festival. Its a bipolar design (speakers on both sides) which is perfect for this use

I got a folding hand truck for my girlfriend to wheel her green J10 around with. She uses it for the fitness classes she teaches and says she hasn't gotten tired of it yet. But she just wheels it from her office to the gym down the hall. I really need to build another one for my own personal use. My J15 is excellent for bass guitar, but not very portable for mobile applications.
