J12LX2 Build

#1 Post by Tedward »

WARNING: It has been reported that viewing posts like these can cause a building addiction. Also contains graphic photos of naked wood!

So, here we go . Got my toys today, two Eminence 2512's and started making saw dust. :hyper:

Spent about six hours cutting and still not done. I started making mistakes so I decided it was time to call it a day. I will continue tomorrow. Need to do the radius cuts (horn braces, throat braces, & throat plate).

I think all parts are rough cut. Wow, there are a lot of pieces. Even going slow I made mistakes like not compensating for the diameter of the router bit so some parts were done twice.

My Jasper jig only went up to 18 15/16" I had to make one to cut a 20" diameter circle.

Since I'm building two cabs I stacked pieces to cut several parts at once.
Tomorrow I get to start assembling. Getting excited now!

Hi Tedward

Nice going there, not many people have built J12 Lites before.
Quite keen to see your future progress with these babies.

How you finding the build so far? any difficulties?

Yep, I tend to agree with you, nothing better than sharp clean tools..

And your build is taking shape nicely

Oh man, I'm getting some flashbacks, in a good way. Planning another pair if 10's in the hopefully near future, then I can send off my jigs (I was asked for them) & clear my garage. I'll be watching to glean tips.

Btw, nice liking cam clamp :D & nice clean build.

The plans are very detailed and precise as are all of Bills plans are. I have found that when I get frustrated and start making mistakes it's time to call a break for the day. I tend to push myself as if I was at work. I'm a self employed painting contractor and I have no employees so, if the work doesn't get done I don't get payed. Funny how that works.

Read the plans, study the plans and study the plans some more. I found that if I go through the build in my mind paying attention to each step and how it sets you up for the next phase of the project, things go smother.

On with the progress:

Really nice build :)

I´m really starting to feel like building a pair of Jack Lites, just for the nice build :D Not that I actually need Jacks, but well, allways good to have different options:P maybe a Jack 10, or 210 Lite, if thats possible :P

I´d really like more curved horns, like Wedgehorns with curved horns or something, or a curved compressionhorn in my D 280s, just for the fun of building and nice looks :)

Keep up the good work on your build Tedward, gonna be nice to see them completed!

Ok, so after I got my daily chores done I got to play in the garage. Got the duct braces, the ducts, and throat sheaths in.

I am having a problem bending to throat sheaths, though. I used 1/8" birch ply and this stuff is stiff. I tried to bend them with steam and a bending iron but since it's plywood it was a no go. Is there a trick to bending this or should I use bender board?

For the time being more photos. :hyper:

Only if you cut it on the wrong axis. I built mine with no steaming or special techniques, bending it into place with only hand pressure.

I didn't mention that these will used as bass cabs and PA cabs. I'll use the Omni 10's for bass when the J12L's are being used as PA cabs. Will six tweeters be enough and if so can they done in a melded array? Tedward
