Deltalite 2512 repairable?

#1 Post by gdougherty »

Have an OT12 I noticed had some buzzing distortion at a recent gig. Pulled it and replaced with one of my current spares to diagnose later. Getting it back home I've found the voice coil (I'd assume) is now making a squeaking noise if you press on the cone. I know you can replace the diaphragm on a CD driver and you can repair the cone on a LF driver. Is the voice coil in this case likely repairable, or do I just need to pony up for a new 2512?

In a reasonably recent thread the comment was made that all the components for a eminence recone are individual.
You may be able to carefully cut out the VC and replace it...as well as dust cap I imagine (need to cut that out to re shim/align).
Just make sure you measure VC depth before removal.

The other possibility is that the magnet has moved...though less likely

DR 250: x 2 melded array, 2x CD horn, March 2012 plans.
T39's: 4 x 20" KL3010LF , 2 x 28" 3012LF.
WH8: x 6 with melded array wired series/parallel.
Bunter's Audio and Lighting "like"s would be most appreciated...

No, you can't. You have to do a complete recone. Besides, voice coils are not sold separately.
With the cost of neo drivers a recone would be economically logical.

I should have been more succinct.
A Eminence recone kit has VC, cone, spider, dustcap as individual components, to make up the whole. If you bought a recone kit, perhaps, perhaps, you may be able to do just the VC.
Then again, if you bought a recone kit, you might well just do a full recone.
Doesn't matter one iota if the magnet has moved though...

Not practical.

Having never done a recone, might I be better off getting a new driver? Figure by the time I pay someone to repair I may be near the $140 for a new anyway?

Any thoughts or insight on this one? Do "normal" eminence recone kits come in parts rather than assembled as cone spider and vc as they claim? With step by step instructions I think I could tackle a recone.

Buy a new driver, then learn to recone on that to keep as a spare?
Who doesn't want to learn a new skill... especially one that'll save dollars down the road :fingers:

As I recall they come VC, spider and cone glued up and a shim is included. The hardest part may be getting one unless Leland happens to have one. Looks like they may be out of stock right now and dealers have to buy them in packs of 10.

Thanks for the insight. Wondered since they claim the kit comes as is supposedly from eminence but other material on the site indicates they preassemble parts of kits.

The neo driver kits don't come that way. They're completely separate. The 10 unit minimum makes it pretty tough to stock them.

Parts express says it's $65+shipping for recone. They do good work too.

They'll repair for $65 and I just ship it back and forth?
