'tis not a TAT, 'tis a BAT Jbl GTO1014D

#1 Post by Gregory East »

After an epic gestation BAT is finally installed in the boot. Sounds great. He knows his heritage.

BAT is for Bad Auto Tuba, a refold of TAT so as to fit in the chunky driver. I received the GTO as a substitution for an older model recommended driver, not in stock as it turned out.

Before I put in the car it did a gig for my jazz band and a big band rehearsal. Both times with a DR250. It was the best sound the jazz band had ever had.

BAT has plenty of sensitivity. The DR250 was reduced 3dB to let the wee fella keep up.

Something is up with the amp or the head unit or the power supply. Sub cuts in and out when I try to give it some extra. Up to that point it sounds great.

Can't wait to hear about the results once you have the head unit/amp thing sorted out. Should be slammin' with that beefy driver.

Can testify that the 1014 is a beefy driver. Did you remove the rubber cover from the magnet in the end? its about 3-4mm thick.
Have run the older jbl gto 804's at about 20w under rated power all night before they seem pretty indestructible.
2 TAT 16" loaded with JBL GTO 804 + V plate

To do:
17" Autotuba with JBL GTO 1002D 10"

It made a mighty live bass drum at the jazz gig. It was a relatively quiet gig but that much bass in a car would be deafening, slamming, call it what you like. Not my cup of tea and no way for my stock speakers to keep up with it. I suppose I could set it up to do a "one octave wonder" trick below the tops. It might be fun for a demo but I'm not into that hokey sound for everyday listening.

The driver purchase was an accident. If I had known about it being substituted I would have cancelled the order but it was sent before they let me know what was up. There were a lot of factors in the decision to do the BAT. Me being cheap and liking the "something for nothing factor" of getting a 350W monster driver for same price, otherwise having to get the guys that sent it to pay for return couier when they were good enough to give me a bargain, then pay through the nose for shipping for a recommended driver, I decided to get adventurous.

Everyone wants photos, I don't know why, it looks almost exactly like a TAT at the horn mouth and has near exactly the same profile, it's 15" wide.

I left the rubber cover on in case it turned out hokey and I needed to sell the beast. The most it's had would be about 20W I think. When I ran it on the jazz gig the XTi1000 was limited to -12dB, it's wired 8ohm, booyah. 275W down 12dB is what? I always forget the maths.

Is the bass boost on? If so, shut it off. Do you have heavy gauge wiring for the power supply and ground? It needs it. Do the rear speakers sound OK by themselves with the sub ouptut wires disconnected?

Had some time in the seat with BAT on Fri night. Yeah baby! It gets a bit out of control when "The Rock FM" puts on their self promotion announcements with a rumbling earthquake shudder, very theatrical.

No doubt I could get the rear vision mirror to shake about playing tunes but the rear speakers would never keep up and it would be deafening anyway.

+1 This is exactly how I ended up with my 1014 after ordering the 1002d

Now that is what I like to hear. Glad it worked out, sounds like a cool build.

Had another crack with BAT and DR250 bass rig last night at rowdy bar jam. Still limited to about 40W and killing it. Uber smooth bass with just the right amount of sparkle. The guys were loving it as much as I was. Lots of quizzical looks and jibes about "Greg's furniture moving services" but after plugging it in it didn't need any explanation.

I think there should be a mod for this kind of refold or something. It sounds pretty darn potent.

I don't know that it has much more to offer over a GTO804 TAT but if any forum member wants to do one they can easily get the details.

Shame I didn't see this earlier. I also used a JBL GTO1014D. Didn't alter the plans though 8) . Here's a couple of pics how I fixed it:

This is obviously not going to work. No room for the speaker to breath:

So let's try another approach:

It fits :hyper: . ...barely

It'll never come out, though. but since my 130W car amp will probably never fry this 850W RMS woofer, I'll took my chances. It has been in my car (a Volkswagen Passat station) for about two years now and I have no complaints. Lowpass 80Hz, no HP. Compared to the 740P (sold to a friend) this speaker doesn't bottom out as fast with very low frequencies.
