Crown com tech

#1 Post by J_Dunavin »

Any thoughts on this series of amps?
May be silly, but i want all my amps to match. Right now i am using Peavey IPS amps, but it seems hard to find more of them. Where as there seems to be more used crown amps.... hum maybe that's a sign....
Maybe i should stick with my IPS amps.

My thoughts are....

Really old
Really heavy
Really hard to hook up on the fly with screw terminals
Really underpowered for the hassle of weight and connections.

Don't get me wrong, I love Crown. But, it's time for this Grandpa to hit the retirement home, not your rack.

See I'm ok with old heavy, and even the screw terminals. My IPS's have screw terminals, and i just made my own rack with my own connections. In fact i really like the terminals as it gives me flexibility to make it the way i want.
What i want to know now is how do they sound?

Jack Sprat liked 'em heavy too.... :D

You are running a retirement home there.....those IPS date back to the early nineties also. In fact, I've got one at the church (IPS400) that you can have if you'll come get it (then you'll have a matched set :D :D ).

Seriously, I can't tell you how they'll sound - but I think the Crown will be equal or better than the Peavey. None of those amps puts out much power, but if it fits your needs, then go for it. But, I wouldn't pay very much for one of those old Crowns - amps approaching their 20th birthday are getting pretty long in the tooth....especially with the low cost, low weight options that are out there.

Don't tease about the 400
Texas is a bit of a stretch from IL.
If your serious though PM me and let me know what you would want for it and shipping.

Now i'm sure that we could start a whole other thread, but i really like the older amps. Every "older" amp (solid state) that i have heard, i thought have sounded really good. And maybe it's because i am an avionics engineer by trade but I like to look into a piece of equipment and see BIG transistors and resistors, with a transformer that probably came out of a nuclear power plant. HA my ISP 400 with rack probably weighs in at 40lbs!

I'll never go back to par 56's, old heavy amps, or inefficient cabs again. I can run my whole rig off of one 15 amp outlet (p.a., lights, and backline.) Back in the day, it took much more than that. My back loves it too.

Give me light weight amps, efficient cabs and l.e.d. lights. :D
Once you go Jack, you never go back!

(4) Dr200 Beta 8, Melded Array

Last weekend my band mate brought 4 LED lights to our outdoor rock gig and I was amazed at the amount of light they produced with absolutely no heat and minimal power draw. It was our only stage lighting. He owns a couple music stores so I told him to order me the exact same set up.
Tomorrow I'm going to stop procrastinating - WB
