TAT is live...

#1 Post by LEVLHED »

I finally got my van back today....2 weeks and $4500 later a reman engine installed. Ouch. Vroom.

I decided it was time to install the amp and then I couldn't stop until the TAT was in there too! I just spent about an hour and a half cruising and bumping.
The amp is an Alpine MRV-F450 5-channel amp pushing (according to the spec sheet) 30W x 4 and 150W x1 @ 12V 20-20kHz 4ohm -- 50W x 4 and 200W x 1 @ 14.4V 4ohm. I think it's a good match for the Tang Band and I got it for only $80 locally on CL. It's got all the features I need, 15/30hZ high pass and continuously variable low pass for the sub channel and continuously variable high pass on the other 4 channels. Adjustable gain all the way around and 3 pairs of line level inputs...I'm glad I bought a head unit with all those line level outs! There's also some kind of sub eq knob adjustment that I will probably need to spend some time with yet. I'm not exactly sure what it does.
I think it's been a good 12 years since I had a sub in my ride and I'm not sure why I've waited so long!
Not much to say, the thing does just what I expected. Not insane bass by my standards, but still PLENTY to keep me (an admitted bass addict) happy. It took me a couple stops to set the gain structure nice but once I got it dialled in I started listening to some choice dubstep mixes. Booyah. That clean horn-loaded bass we all love vibrating the mirrors. It was nice being able to dial the low end out of the front/rear. I think I have them set at about 70hz. The low pass on the TAT is @ 100hz, high pass set to 30hz. Sub eq knob set to 6dB. Bass eq on the head unit @ zero.

I'll have some friends listen tomorrow and get their feedback. I think they'll have a hard time believing it's a single 8 with about 100 watts!

The TAT was worth the effort. It still needs to get painted/finished but I just couldn't wait any longer.
So, it's not very pretty but I'll try and get a pic or two this weekend so you all can see.

It's a great sub, that's for sure!

I would say that you should leave the sub EQ knob turned down. I took this from the Crutchfield site....tuned Bass EQ (6 dB bass boost at 50 Hz with adjustable Q factor, while frequencies below 30 Hz are cut by 6 dB) on the sub channel With the strong bottom end of the TAT, you don't need the boost like other subs.

I'll look into that. The manual didn't give that much info..

Would maybe have the low pass on the TAT a little lower at 80-90hz to compensate for the rising response then raise the high pass on the fronts to 100hz.
Im using an alpine from the same product line as yours the mrd-m300 mono amp for mine which manages to put out about 100w rms to the tat (assuming it is 8ohm load). The TAT can take abit more but doesnt really get much louder and starts to sound nasty at about 180rms (jbl gto 804 8" 200Wrms).
2 TAT 16" loaded with JBL GTO 804 + V plate
Tannoy Precision 8D monitors, Tannoy System 800 monitors
Minidsp 2x4, Berry DCX2496, Lem 420 amplifier

To do:
17" Autotuba with JBL GTO 1002D 10"

I like it better @ 100. I did raise the HP on the fronts a bit.
I turned the Bass EQ down to zero, going to have to listen a bit. I hooked up the multimeter, amp is able to hit 27-29v peaks (maybe more, I didn't want to push it) so it's working just fine on the TB driver. Nice combo
Of course NOW the weak link are the factory speakers..

Just finished my TAT yesterday and took a ride with it in my van. All I can say is wow. I have a small Pioneer amp rated at about 100 watts pushing it and the SPL plus the sound quality is hard to believe from a single 8". It is an amazing design. Built mine with the idea of using it in the Van but also as a sub for small gigs that come up every once and a while. Have a couple events coming up with less then 50 people in a small room, which the TAT should be a good fit for.

I guess a couple of TAT's would be kinda cool for small gigs. I tend to just bring my entire "big" rig for everything no matter how small though:)

FYI I did turn the low pass down to a bit below 90hz after the initial wow of all that 100hz punch wore thin.
