Melded Arrays with No Table Saw Suggestions

#1 Post by doncolga »

Hey,

I'm about to build some melded arrays for my OT12's but only have a miter saw to cut them with. I tried to cut the top and bottom frames first, but the saw wouldn't cut all the way down the long side of the frames. Then I decided to cut the angles first, then the frames second, which seemed to be OK. The eight I practiced with glued together pretty good for four levels with only one level being a tad too wide. I may try making two jigs to place on the saw to keep the consistent placement when cutting the angles. On the practice I just marked two notches on the saw and lined the piezos up with those. Any other suggestions/observations for doing this without a table saw?

Thanks!

Donny

I only use a miter saw. The key is to clamp stops to the worktable.

Yeah....watch your fingers! That's pretty close work on a miter saw.

Set a square stop block on the left side of the saw. Make all cuts on one side of the piezos.

Reset the stop block for the second cut and make all of those. Same for the 45s.

And remember that when cutting the 45s the blade is going to be in a different position behind the fence, so don't put your fingers over the fence to hold the piece.

After (just 10 minutes ago) finishing all the cuts on the piezos, I think if I were to do it over again, I'd do the straight cuts on the miter saw and the 45s on the table saw. Even though I spent extra time making sure the cuts were square, I still ended up with the flange on on side being a little wider than the other. Enough so, that it required me to alternate my 45s so that I now have the lugs facing in on one side of the array and out on the other.

But it will be perfectly lined up on the front face.....wee bit of anal shining through, eh?
