Headphone amps
Headphone amps
Recently I needed a headphone amp, when doing home recordings of piano tracks (two up to four piano tracks dubbed, pianist and myself needed to hear the recorded tracks through phones while adding additional tracks). Nothing fancy, no superduper hifi needed, but at least two to four channels. Behringer HA8000 is hardly more expensive than most things 2-4ch, looks like great value. Even if one or two channels fail over time, there's still plenty channels left. It might serve in-ears if I wanted to.
Has anyone used this headphone amp? Or recommendations for something similar?
BTW: I know Behringer gets some bashing at times. It seems they have their lemons, but also some gear that is amazing value for money. I'd like to know in which category their headphone amps fall. Also: I'm in this for fun, not for profit, so can't afford top notch quality, and don't need to meet riders.

Re: Headphone amps
I've got the 4-channel HA4700 model. I was looking at the HA8000 also, but when I started looking closely, there were some features that had been removed from the HA8000 in order to accommodate the extra channels, and I wanted the extra features more than the extra channels. But it's been a while so I can't remember what they were off the top of my head.
I don't use mine a lot, but I've not had any problems with it, and it sounds fine.

Re: Headphone amps
I have found Rolls to be pretty good stuff. They offer a couple of 4 ch units that are well under $100 and the 6 ch is just bit more than the Berry.

Re: Headphone amps
Thanks guys, I have sent a PM message to him. I don't see much Rolls gear over here in Europe, it may be hard to find locally.

Re: Headphone amps
Haven't heard from him, but I think I will order one of these shortly. For now, trying a workaround. Audio out of ADA8000 into cinch tape-in or CD-in on an old receiver. Doesn't work: apparently signal level is way too low
Is it not possible to use line-out from pro gear into cinch line-in on consumer grade gear? Not for pro sound applications, just using some of my gear for occasional home recording.

Re: Headphone amps
Pro level gear puts out between 0dB to +4dB line level signal. Consumer level gear is -10dB, IIRC. You may be severly overdriving the inputs of the consumer gear. My mixer (older Yamaha) has -10dB line outs, so I don't have this problem. Check your analog mixer, if you still have it.AntonZ wrote:Is it not possible to use line-out from pro gear into cinch line-in on consumer grade gear?

Re: Headphone amps
I don't have an analogue mixer. The only things in the house with headphone outputs are consumer grade amps/receivers. But it seems my signal is too weak rather than too strong for the line level inputs
Edit: Coming to think of it, I've used this receiver as additional preamp rather than receiver because the power stage had died. I removed most parts from the power stage (everything that produced smoke
). If that drives the headphone output as well, that may very well explain why I hardly get any signal on the headphone output. Will have a look at that.

I'll call him and tell him to answer your e-mail!AntonZ wrote:Haven't heard from Jeremy, but I think I will order one of these shortly. For now, trying a workaround. Audio out of ADA8000 into cinch tape-in or CD-in on an old receiver. Doesn't work: apparently signal level is way too low![]()

Re: Headphone amps
Thanks Ron. It's not an email though (don't have his email address) but rather a PM that I sent to user on the Keystone Sportstalk forum.

Yeah that would be right. Since football season is over he's probably not checking up too much.I'll give him a call.AntonZ wrote:Thanks Ron. It's not an email though (don't have his email address) but rather a PM that I sent to user QB on the Keystone Sportstalk forum.

Re: Headphone amps
Thanks Ron, got news from him. He doesn't use the 8ch Behringer anymore. Now uses this smaller 4ch unit http://www.behringer.com/EN/Products/AMP800.aspx . I'll see if that's available, fine for recording and possibly cheaper, but not enough channels for double duty in a band setting.
Re: Headphone amps
lol Ok. It's been awhile since I talked to him.Did he say why he stopped using the first one? I called him but I left a message. I suppose I should touch base with him sooner or later anyways!AntonZ wrote:Thanks Ron, got news from him. He doesn't use the 8ch Behringer anymore. Re: Headphone amps
Nope, did not name a reason. Funny thing, you getting back in touch with a client because of a question from a fellow internet forum member living on another continent.
Re: Headphone amps
As long as he pays the rental I have no reason to contact him. He can add subtract etc. as he pleases. If he has issues then he would call but after the first 2 months of operation I really didn't hear much other then to tune in on Friday nights to catch the local HS Scores from their broadcast and say hey.AntonZ wrote:Nope, did not name a reason.
