First Build: Omni Top 112s

#1 Post by ripNdeb »

I'm threatening to build some cabs...yikes. Last cabinets I made was about 30 years ago
The PA will be for full band (classic rock, contemporary Christian, Beatles to Van Halen to Lincoln Brewster to Hillsong etc etc.) and used in a variety of small venues from house parties, to small/medium sized clubs and bars, to local veterans/grange hall type buildings, to outdoor wedding receptions. I think that covers most of it.
One band I'm in currently uses a pair of JBL Eons, 15" passive (when they first came out with the plastic cabs) for the mains...no subs :? They/we put vocals and sometimes a little bass drum (to little effect) through them.
I've been reading the forums since I joined in September and, I'm guessing a pair of J112s or a pair of OTop 12s would easily out-perform the Eons. correct?
My idea and goal, so far, is a pair of OTop 12s first, then add a pair of T39s later if I find I have the skill and patience to carry on. Also, to put the whole band through the PA - NOT to be louder but to sound better; even play quieter hopefully. The stage volume is awful sometimes. Yea, I'm gettin' old :)
Anyway, all these things considered, :feedback:
My build so far: read forum posts for four months, found a local source for some nice looking 5x5 BB, today I made some fairly straight practice cuts with a circular saw.
Oh, and I'm considering going to 3/4" wood and this special glue I was reading about.....j/k
Thanks in advance,
Dana

Hi Dana, welcome to the forums! Sounds like you are already on the right track.

A pair of Jack 112's or Otop 12's would most certainly outperform JBL Eons - heck, one Jack 10 is worth about two Eon's in sound output, nevermind the clarity and quality of sound you get.

The most ideal setup is subs + tops if you have a full band. Next best would be Jack's (any size) used as full range without subs, or occasionally with a sub.

Build DR's if you have the chops, build Otops if you don't.

If you're cashed up you might like to start with the subs. Then no dilemma about Otop vs Jack.

+1 to starting with subs. T39's would be a good start and aren't too tough to build.

Plans ordered; clearing out the garage to commence (I should post before & after pics for a laugh, NOT)
OT12s and T39 and Jig plans on the way; now, is there a cut sheet layout for 5X5 in the plans or is there a way to get one somewhere?
2X OTop 112, 3012HO, melded - 2X T39, 27", Lab 12 - XF 212 - 4 DR250, 2 melded, 2 straight

I built a pair of 18" Tuba 30's first and gigged them with my Mackie tops. After I sold the Mackies I started using my standby EV tops. One of those almost doesn't work, so I really hope to finish my OT12's this weekend...certainly lighter than the EV's.

OT12 has a cut sheet, but the T39 does not, as you pick a width. Use cutlist:

Plans arrived later in the morning that I ordered them. A couple of early OT12 questions:
1. Do ALL 3012HO options require a 6" phase plug and slotless baffle or is it ONLY the 3012HO/NSD 2005 HF driver option? Plans say 3012HO/NSD 2005 HF driver option = 6" diff. All other options = 5"; A little later they talk about the 3012HO and the Delta Pro having less than optimum Fs and Vas but do not include the NSD 2005 in this section. Just clarifying.
2. Is there a preferred driver for better bottom end while using only a pair of OT12s?

OT12's don't really have bottom end to begin with. Good to about 100hz (at least my 212's are) I think 1x12's are 125hz?
They are really meant to be used with subs.

A bump for question #1 above.

O Top 112 with 3012HO and melded array = 6" phase plug and no slots in baffle?

Early pics soon to follow - very exciting stuff :)

-1. If you are building a cab to use with the 3012HO/NSD 2005 HF driver option the circle is 6” diameter; for all other options the circle is 5” diameter
from OTop 12 plans, where it is also italicized in bold print.

Thanks for the clarification Bill - I misinterpreted that line in the plans. Good thing since I'm starting a 3012/melded this week. Sorry for misinforming!
