Please give me some advice that I won't take!

#1 Post by Bruce Weldy »

Hi, let me introduce myself. I'm planning to build a new sound system. I have extensive experience watching bands and once even helped my cousin carry equipment for his band.....so I'm pretty knowledgeable.

I've spent about 5 minutes reading the home page and just found this forum. I also plan to read all the plans as soon as I finish building some speakers.

My plan is to build 14 ATs for the bottom end - I've got some 18s from my buddies car stereo shop that should really kick ass in those ATs. Then a couple of T39s on each side loaded with double 15s. For tops I'll use those TLH speakers with 12 6x9 coaxial car speakers I got from my buddy at the wrecking yard.

I've spent a good 15 minutes putting this whole plan together, so I'm not looking for changes to my plans, I just need to know.......

Will my Pioneer stereo amp be enough to run this? Or, will I need to use my Fender Twin for the subs?

Thanks!

4 - OT12 2512
1 - T24

:loler: Great plans! Don't forget to line the speakers with carpet inside. My mate works in a music store and he told me if you do this it boosts submax bass and filters resonant harmonics. Finish in a clear PVC foam for better performance too.

Use the Twin for the tops and the Pioneer for the subs and dont forget to corner load the amps especially the Pioneer! Oh and those tubes in the Twin need polished once a week too! But be careful and only polish them when they have had time to cool!

Hey dont forget to load those subs with JBYells!

Oh and those good drivers you bought wont work so sell them to me (of course I'll be a pal and take em off yer hands ) and I might pay you enough cash so you can buy at least 1 of the really goods ones you saw in Super Audio pro Magazine! Hurry cause I only am this thoughtful this time of year!

I think that speaker is the Pyle OFSH18" sub... if I recall reading they were the top of the line model. I think one on each side of the stage should be good enough, maybe put the T39 on top of them for better coverage.

I forgot to mention that I'm building 'em out of 1 inch MDF.. The MDF is so square that glue won't be necessary. I'll make up for the extra weight by not putting those silly braces in there. Oh, did I mention that my cousin is a carpenter, so we'll be redesigning the cabs to make better use of 2x4 bracing. That's all set, so I don't need any help there. My real question is:

Railroad spikes or scotch tape to hold it all together?

When the student is ready the teacher will appear.

I guess alterations and innovations might result from going off track. Science often advances in this way. But all the same Bill's genius plus the lifetimes of this forum's pro sound guys, musicians, producers, and entertainers aren't easily gainsaid. (Even the most superficial reading of acoustic physics and electronics should establish that!)

Sorta reminds me of "my" kung fu teacher, sifu Austin Goh of London. An undoubted world class master nonetheless guys would dis his style, omit this and that they thought unnecessary, or go off to the forests of Thailand on some course and come back a master, or add all sorts of extraneous exercises and equipment when simply being a humble disciple might have sufficed.

Oh this is a great thread  ...way over due.

Just in case anyone new reads any of the advice above, please do not follow the advice being laid down. This is merely all in fun.

Just like many of us that show up, looking for an alternative to the "Industry Norm". We have hopes for better, bigger, louder and cheaper. For so many years, things learned have taken root. When there is actually an alternative, Bills Excellent Choice in Cabinets.

Not fullying understand Bill's design's and a previous background in the Industry Norm, it can be overwhelming. Hence the many questions asked, which are all good to get a grasp of BFM. That's how we all started, by asking questions most of you have asked and will probably be as patient when they are spoken of again.

This is a good read, "Yes please, can I have another?"
