Need a Amp...

#1 Post by nastyford77 »

So I blew an amp this weekend. Started off Friday night playing my residency. The Titan 48 was going strong, then without warning, it cut out, then came back, then cut back out. I had this problem a few weeks ago, ended up being a shorted speaker cable. Well, to make a long story short, the amp is DOA.
I have done a few hours of research here on the Crown XLS1000 and found some good and some bad. I understand the Low Pass and High Pass issue, in which I would not be able to set both hi and lo on the same channel. I believe this is the biggest issue that I would be facing running the t48 with the xls1000. As of right now, the t48 has a delta15lfa driver. I plan on upgrading to the 3015lf, but it looks like the upgrade will be delayed a bit :wall:
Anyway, my question is would the xls work ok for a while with no other processing other than the built in DSP? I plan on setting the limiter more conservative than normal. The way I plan on doing this is using a signal generator running the tone down to 20hz or so, and using a scope to catch transients (I'm an electronics instructor) keep the voltage at 35 - 40 volts max using the xls's built in limiter. I fully understand there is a risk of blowing the driver, but I don't want to pop it during the first gig with it, if that makes any sense. Up to now, I haven't used a limiter, but I keep a close eye on my levels.
The other reason is I need another amp for my tops, so buying the xls will get me back going for now, until I can afford the xTI series for the sub. Then I will already have the xls for the tops.
How many problems do you see with this setup.

When setting up your limiter you'll want the tone within the passband of the T48, not 20Hz.

So other than setting the limiter, it should work? At least relatively safely...

An amp with hi pass filtering would be best. XTI's are going cheap on ebay right now...

I'm uncertain how the XLS fits into this picture. Is this an amplifier you happen to have on-hand, or you are looking to purchase :?:

Looking to purchase, I did some research on Ebay last night and found the xTI1000's for 300, so I do think that is the route I'm gonna take. It would be better anyway.

XTi's are definitely a step in the right direction over the XLS. If this is for subwoofer duty I recommend minimum an XTi 2000 to power two subs. Having some overhead is worth the extra coin.

So I played some cards right, and there is a good possibility I can pick up a Factory Refurbished xTI4000 for $550 from my local store. I know its overkill for 1 sub, but the way I see it, I won't need to upgrade amps when I build more cabs. Anyway, on the the questions:

1. How do I set the high and low pass filters, I checked the owners manual out, didn't really see anything about setting these filters with the onboard settings. Will I need to use the computer software to set the filters?

2. Is there a setting to fine tune the limiter? I see the onboard settings for -3db, -6db and so on, but no fine adjustment to set the limiter with a meter.

3. I am unsure if the amp will come with the usb cord. If it doesn't , could I use any cord with the right ends, such as what is used with serato?

4. I don't have my plans with me, what are the recommended settings for a Titan 48. I know the limiter needs to be set with the output voltage at 60 volts MAX because I am using a Delta 15lfa driver. I probably will set it less, I get jittery with stuff running near max. But what I need is the Hi and low pass filters, crossover settings (ie butterworth, -24db, and the like) things like that. I have searched, but only found bits and pieces.

5. Umm, any other things I may need to know that I may have missed.

Thanks in advance for any information anybody has. I greatly appreciate it.

Thanks for the info. The reason I need the settings is the plans are at my dad's shop, over 2 hours away. So I have no info on the recommended settings.

Thats a pretty good deal, however, I have to have this amp for Friday night, so I'm gotta pick up the amp before the gig.
