Another Plywood question?

#1 Post by mobetter »

Getting ready to purchase my wood for my first build, a T39 and OT12.
My local Plywood company only has a Baltic Birch in a 7 Ply the outer most plys are thin.
I will check with Lowes to see if they have the Arauco in 1/2" if not I know my Local HD Has it in 3/4" I think its a 9 or 10 Ply and the outer plys are thick. and It looks to be void free.
How much added weight will this add to the final cabinet?
That Plywood company also has a ACX RADIATA PINE but it is a 7 Ply as well.
I'm in the Dallas Fort Worth area, If any one knows of a source for the 5 Ply Arauco or BB Let me know.
otherwise If lowes doesn't carry it I'll probably get the stuff from HD. I wanted to get started on it ASAP.

50%. Do not use 3/4". I've never seen anything at HD that can be used.

You can't have too many plies, so long as they are plies and not thin veneer.

.
Very doubtful that is Baltic Birch. More likely is cabinet grade Birch.....totally different thing. Baltic Birch is even-thickness plys and usually many more than 7 for 1/2". And you will only find it at a lumber supplier, not a big box store.

4 - OT12 2512
1 - T24

As long as it doesn't have a thin veneer on the outside you should be fine.

Baltic Birch is not required. The only requirement for structural integrity is at a minimum five even plies; you can use any wood type you want as long as it meets that requirement.

Baltic Birch is suggested because it is such fine wood usually with high quality.

there's some of use around this area. Boostfab is closer to fortworth, i think. But if this is at all close to you http://www.centralhardwoods.com/, I would check it out as they have cheap Baltic Birch and even have the bendy ply stuff and a BUNCH of other stuff.

Awesome, in that case I would go for the 7-ply BB, great price!

Weird. my BB is 9 ply, but you might be talking about another shop.

Also, if it's not too much trouble could you link to the arauco on the lowes website as boostfab also said he found some but whenever I try searching it never give me any results anymore.

OH and one last thing, BB is much better quality overall, but arauco is lighter.

most lowes in fort worth carries 15/32" arauco.

I have not seen a home depot in dfw are that carries the good baltic birch or arauco. you have to look carefully there usually a thin veneer on both side.
you need to get the 1/2" or 15/32" don't get 3/4".
Rusian birch is the good stuff, if you can get it for cheaper than the arauco, then go for it. The cheapest place i have known about near by is in Grand Prairie sell them at $25/ea 5'x5'

The damn website keeps giving me 0 results, thanks Boostfab, I just might have to pick some as really don't want to use mdf for my dr's and if I got some arauco I could start and really knock off a whole lot time if I begin on the internals. BB is very nice indeed, but arauco did the job just as well and lighter, so who knows, I just might end up building them out arauco.
