tascam mixers

#1 Post by sine143 »

what do you guys think of this mixer? I'm looking to pick up a cheap board that isnt gonna have major flaws (like channel bleed or scratchy pots etc)

http://pro-audio.musiciansfriend.com/pr ... sku=582246

kinda wish it had some compression on some channels (for kick mic) and if there are better options in this price range, point em out to me!

I'm also looking at the yamaha MG124C and MW12C. Is usb capability worth it? I usually run a laptop over in the amp rack for system architect, so draggin a comp out isnt an issue.

There shouldn't be, but there is. Anything coming from LOUD these days is suspect. I'd be looking at Yahama.

FWIW, I like the Yamaha MG series. Tascam is reputable, but you can get the MG 124C (6 mic pres w/ 4 compressors) for less money when you buy from somewhere like NSL or Full Compass.

If you want to spend a little more you could do the MG166C which also comes in a USB version and get a few more channels and comps. I've used the MG206C in several installations... very nice sounding boards.

I would also suggest a Yamaha mixer. Better to go with a known good one then to take a chance. My main mixer is a MG166CX, the X stands for effects. The compressors and effects give you a lot of flexibility. I bought it as an open box special from UniqueSquared on eBay. It only cost me if I remember correctly about $250.00 with free shipping. If you are patient and look around you might find a similar deal and a mixer like this will serve you well into the future. Most likely you will outgrow the small mixer in short order and have to purchase another.

USB is nice to have and you can pick up a cheap interface on Amazon and add it to any board. Keep in mind that it will only give you a stereo recording. When I have to record critical stuff I use a Presonus Firestudeo Tube. This gives me a separate track for each input allowing me to adjust the levels and add any effects I need later on.

I was waiting on a price quote from nsl when I posted this. looks like I can get it cheaper, with compressors! this is at the top of my list for aquisition atm. the MG166C is pretty nice, and if I can find it for 250 (with or without the fx version), hell that will be my choice.

WT??? what do you mean waiting??? don't you have an account sine?

And I would pass on the tascam. I have their 8 track recorded and it's i would dare say that the quality of it just seems to be below behringer; it's harsh, but it just feels like that to me. Not buying another thing from Tascam again.

However, around that price range you have the option of going with a (my numbers are all xlr inputs) 6 channel yamaha +compressors, 8 channel peavey, or a 6-8 channel soundcraft.

I've not heard really anything negative from those mixers but from personal preference I would go with the yamaha in a heartbeat, IMO, the yamahas crush ANYTHING in their price range.

NSL doesnt offer automatic price quotes for yamaha (or pretty much anything it seems). since I'm 5 hours behind atm (hawaii), I had to wait for normal business hours to get a price quote.

The Yamaha MG166CX is a great little mixer. I've been using one for several months now....very versatile.

6 - T39 3012LF
4 - OT12 2512
1 - T24
1 - SLA Pro
2 - XF210

Yes they do. All you have to do is pay a dollar for an account. Best dollar you'll ever spend.

Except in my case... I do price shopping there and then call Cal at Full Compass. He usually does the same or better deals.
