Tuba HT

#1 Post by tweedpower1 »

Built a Tuba HT, my third Tuba. This is a different animal. I built a 30" wide version. This was the widest size that would fit through my door. The low end output is unreal. It is the greatest for the LF channel in my HT. I have been experimenting with different crossover points and I think that I like crossing it over lower at 60 or 80 hz. The power in the sub 50 hz region is impressive. It lets you know what the sound engineers had in mind. I get great output down to 15 hz and basically flat to 18 hz when using minimal EQ. It has a lot of headroom too. I have experimented with placement and corner loading. I still use my two Table Tuba's for music but I will use the Tuba HT for movies.

I played around with a few different amps for my THT. The most recent was a Dayton 240w plate amp ($99 on sale). It wasn't intended for this application as it's only say 150w into the 8 ohm Dayton series II driver I'm using... plus the horn impedance. Well short story is it's more than enough power for over the top theater.
I remember going to an Imax theater 10 years ago in Duluth and seing the stacks of Crown or Bryston amps there. The bass was impressive but I must say as far as acoustic memory serves the THT with 150 watts comes close and with 300 watts off my Mackie 1400i it gets even better than in my memory. So no kilowatts are necessary. The speech modulation, "pant leg flapping" and chest pressure nausea are available with much lower power demands.
