How anal to be with PL, Titan 48 plywood question

#1 Post by mdiehl »

Hi all! I'm in the beginning stages of FINALLY getting a PA system that will eliminate having to pay huge fees to subcontract companies with inferior products.

Anyhow, the goal is to start out with 4-Titan 48 and 4-DR280's (2 with melded array and 2 with flat array). As I familiarize myself with the construction methods, I have 2 questions from people that have built cabinets. I'm going to start with the Titans, and then work my way to the DR's.

How anal should I get about excess PL in non-visible areas, such as inside joints? Do you all wipe away and sand any excess amounts? While I do plan on keeping this as clean as possible, I think I'm overly concerned about any excess amount altering the acoustic properties inside the cabinet.

Also, it's been a while since I've worked with full sheets of plywood. In a 24' wide cabinet, the plans state the side panels are 24"x48". Unlike the plans for the DR, I didn't see a "map" of what pieces get cut out of each piece of plywood. Bill stated that the Titan will take 2-4x8 sheets for sides and panels and half sheet for braces. Does the plywood come in exact dimensions of 4'x8' sheets, because if I were to split those evenly, the dimensions of these pieces would then be off by the width of the blade used. Obviously, if the plywood was over-sized, it wouldn't be a problem. Does anyone have a "map" for what sheets get cut from what pieces of plywood?

Thanks to everyone. The forums have been a great source of information so far!

Not at all. In most of the horn path, it'll never see the light of day again. Near the mouth, it'll scrape off rather easily where it oozes out. Be generous with it on the interior panels that will be difficult to get to later on. It's easier to clean up excess than it is to jam more in when braces and such are in the way.

After a couple panels you'll start to understand how small of a bead is really needed. PL expands quite a bit.

Just make sure you get squeeze out from every panel, especially on the inside as you'll be cutting, not wiping, away the excess PL. And yeah, not much is needed. And here's another thing, if when it dries, you shine a light and you see some light coming through, there's a gap and you should be using more pl for more squeeze out.

As for the cut sheet thing, I remember Bill said he stopped including them in the plans as they are so many widths. but you can find some online, just search for "cut sheet" or "cut sheet program" or something like on this forum. or google it if no avail. There's some for mac and pc.

In a t48 24" wide the internals are cut 23 1/2. Conveniently fitting well on a 4x8 sheet of ply.

I scrape it out. But it's absolutely unnecessary to do that. You can leave it.

I was so paranoid about air leaks when putting together my titans I caulked with the PL inside where it doesn't show!!! Nobody's ever going to see those parts anyhow!! On the parts where it will show, just like posted above, I made sure there was good squeeze out and scraped it clean after it cured.

This is the key to success, and no air leaks between panels and sides.

Read my signature.

24" wide T48 has 23" wide internal width panels. Add 1" for both sides of the T48.
