Jack 12 Bass Cab Review

#1 Post by Dantreige »

I thought I’d give a quick review of my Jack 12’s that I have been working on. You can find my build thread here: http://billfitzmaurice.info/forum/viewt ... 30&t=12907

These were originally being made for use as p.a. tops but I wanted to try them out for my bass rig as well. Last night I had a gig at one of my favorite bars so I threw the cabs together without a full finish, hardware or the peizo arrays. Also, I did not do a break in of the woofers as suggested. There just was not enough time. (And my amps are loaded in a case at my guitar players house. No time to go get them.)

As expected, my first trial with them I was not a jaw dropping experience. However, they did sound very nice and better then the 2x10 I am currently using. That was apparent immediately. The mids were over the top and had to be tamed down quite a bit and the bass slightly boosted to get a good, even tone. It was a crystal clear tone that I really liked though. I would describe it as a lower register piano string. Very clear, crisp and clean.

I dinked around for a couple hours getting to know my new toys and refining my sound with them. I am sure my neighbors really love me now because I had to see how stupid loud these thing are. That is exactly how they are too, STUPID LOUD! I also got “the look” from my wife and I noticed that she prefered to be outside for most of the afternoon. :)

After that, I decided to go ahead and load them up and use them at the gig. I hate bringing new/untested gear to a show, so I also brought my 2x10 incase I needed a back up. I did not need it.

My rig was already set and ready to go when the rest of the band showed up. No one really noticed at first in the flurry of activity to get everything set up and running. When my guitar player noticed them he rolled his eyes and told me they “looked nice”. Haha! I new he would not be impressed with how they looked at the time.

I got some quick revenge soon after when I plugged in and struck that first note. I am sure everyone has a sore neck today, because everyone whipped their heads around in unison and stared at me with open mouths. 

Our soundman was extremely impressed with the tone and volume I could get from these cabs. He said he did not want to run me though the mains because he did not feel like he could get it to sound nearly as good.

Several friend showed up to the gig and I was able to ask them what they thought. Two of them are drummers and have a lot of experience playing and running sound. Both loved everything out front with the only suggestion being, I should be louder. I obliged and instead of getting the “eyebrows” from the soundman, he kept giving me the thumbs-up sign and grinning like a idiot every time I turned it up a hair.

Overall, I am very impressed with these cabs. It’s a shame I’ll have to take them apart to finish them properly and add the peizos. I can’t wait to try them out as tops though. Maybe I’ll need to do one at a time. I don’t think I’ll want to be without at least one working cab.

If you play bass, you need to try one of these! :hyper: :hyper:

That's great to hear. I'm getting ready to post a review on the pair I just finished, once I get all of my thoughts together. One of the guitarists in my band looked at them and said, "Oh, those are cute"! And yes, I experienced everyone give themselves whiplash and the first flurry of notes!!!!
I totally agree that these things need a little processing to sound the best, but I've never had a cab that didn't. However, and maybe breaking in the speakers before I installed them made the difference, I was in awe myself at the amount of booty these things put out, the clarity, over all volume, and the amount of air that was pushing me when standing in front of them. It may be worth it to try and work those speakers out of the cabs while you take the time to finish them.

I'm looking forward to your post Frankie G!

I knew going into the gig that the speakers would need a little tweeking as the night progressed while they got broke in. The low end really started coming on strong as the night went on. When I started my bass control on my head was set at +3. At the end of the night it was -6. Still the same amount of bass if not a lot more.

The great thing is it never sounded boomy to me. I was just trying to be nice to everyone else on the stage. Personally, I was in heaven.
I have to say this, I never had super high hopes for these cabs. When I first learned about them, I was skeptical to say the least. I spent a lot of time reading these forums and a lot of time looking up information apart for these forums to find cold hard facts about the things we are being said here. I was pretty sure that these would be better then I had, but not a magic wand.

I guess my expectations have been exceeded by a huge amount. I've learned a lot of valuable info on speaker placement and many other things as well. So time and money well spent for me.

I am a "set it and forget it" kind of guy when it comes to bass tone. I run everything pretty clean for the most part and use my bass controls and plucking to get the tones I want for different songs.

I can't tap my E string with my thumb and not get a huge wicked grin. The crystal clear sound is hard to get over. I think that is saying something.

Right, I totally get what you are saying. Hard to put into words. I had plenty of bottom but never had any boom. My favorite cab for that kind of bottom used to be an Ampeg SVT 4x10HLF. But that thing weighs a ton and in some rooms, like the one I was in last night, that Ampeg would get boomy no matter what I did with the processing. These jacks gave me that kind of bottom but clean and tight!

Hey guys, it's great to hear the good report! I'm droolin' to get a set done....probably in the spring (home renovations right now).
By the way, how much power are you putting into them?

Hey Tom, I am using an old Carvin R600 amp. I don't think that they are being made anymore. It's only 175 @ 8 ohms (x2).

I'll try to get a voltage reading for a better comparison. I am pretty sure that I won't want to get anywhere neer full volume though. I also want to test it with my GX3 and just my PodXT Live.

Hope that helps.

I used a couple of different amps this past weekend. I just tried to do a full review and when I hit submit got knocked offline! Gonna try again now!
