Sanded Plywood 4-layers?

#1 Post by BoostFab »

Hi guys,

I'm joining the darkside, and gearing up build a THT. As I walk through Home Depot this evening (for some unrelated household supplies) and I decided to strode by the lumber section to see any thing new with usable Birch plywood, unfortunately it's the typical crappy Birch. Anyways I did noticed that they have another type of plywood called Sanded Plywood, the 1/2" type has 4 even layers. Are these any good for building a THT box, since they are pretty inexpensive?

Thanks,
Dan

The recommendation is 5 even ply. I wouldn't use it.

Suggestions:

1. Check Lowes instead of HD. They might have Arauco.

2. Check around some local lumber yards. You should be able to find 5x5 sheets of Baltic Birch. Cabinet makers use BB all the time for drawers and prototypes.

It's crap. Do not use anything from HD.

After some search, I came across Woodcraft (http://www.woodcraft.com), they sell Baltic Plywood/. There's a store near my area; I'm going to check them out and see if they have the size I need. I will stop by Lowe's as well to see if they have the Arauco plywood. I'll check out their prices.

I buy all my BB from Woodcraft in Columbus. It is somewhere around $40 for a 5x5 sheet.

The HD in KC has birch plywood. As much as I don't like HD (they buy old growth wood) I just used it on my T48 and it was awesome to work with.

Once again.....birch and baltic birch are not the same thing! Birch is for cabinet carcasses and usually has a thin veneer. Baltic birch is used for drawers, etc. and has even plys - usually 9-11 for 1/2 inch.

Since the Woodcraft store closes too early, so I went by my local Lowe's this evening to check out their plywood; the only one that are 5 even layers i see are "Aspen Plywood", it doesn't have the thin veneer layers... one of their staff said it's actually Luan plywood. The only size they have in stock are the 24"x48" sheet. Are these Luan plywood anygood?

I'm glad the Lowe's employee said it's Luan, I'm going to stay away far from that.

I found another carpentry wood supplier:
They stock 1/2" Russian birch, & 1/2" Finland birch, and Baltic Birch

I'm going to give both places a call.
