DR280's on Painter Scaffolding

#1 Post by Jayebob »

2 New pairs of DR280 are finally finished and rolled out this week for an outdoor Spokane Jr Symphony Concert. Let me tell you, these boxes arrayed like this throw a long way, intelligible 2 football fields back. These 4 boxes have only 11 piezos per box, and that is plenty! I used metal grills and air conditioner foam. The round handles allow me to grab these from any angle. Combo Speakon jacks on the backs. I have them rigged for flying, but used the hardware to hold them down in the gale for wind and dust storm the orchestra endured that evening. Duratex on the tops, time for Duratex on the 3 year old subs! I usually have one leg of the scaffolding in the "V" created by the old version of the Tuba 24s, but forgot that part at setup. I'm looking forward to using this setup again for the Coeur d'Alene Symphony on Labor Day weekend. My thanks to Paul Plowman, my longtime collaborator and master woodworker for his great work on these! Time to build 4, maybe 8 Jack 10's for a couple of small systems! Oh yes, these stack and fit wonderfully in my 5X8 trailer, leaving plenty of room for amp rack, cable & snake boxes, and mic stand case.

Looks great!

I'd add another set of boards (aluminum planks prefered) to the bottom rungs of the scaffold and place my amp rack there. The added weight should help to stabalize the rig even more. And the cables would have a nice place to rest of the ground.

Of course, I don't know how much your amp weigh, so I may be talking out my a$$. :P

I was actually surprised at the stability of this setup. I stacked at the trailer and rolled the stage left speaker tower across the bumpy grass. I'm considering some sort of bolt or better yet, a strap arrangement to the subs for additional stability. By standing on the amp rack or one of the subs, I easily stacked both boxes on the top rung of the 4' scaffold, and then tipped both forward with 2X4s. Thanks for the suggestion, but, I really don't want to carry around any more scaffold parts, or pick up the amp rack any more than I have to!

Are those the same scaffolds from Lowes?

I want to pick up a pair of those but my audiences are always standing up and a 4' scaffold would make the first box useless, firing into the first 10 people's heads. If they were 5' that would be fantastic.

That's what I would have thought too but seemed to work ok according to all concerned here: http://billfitzmaurice.info/forum/viewt ... 13&t=12299

If the front ten moshing away are there to get their heads blown off they get their wish and I guess it makes for tolerable volume further back?

They are from Lowes. Werner brand. If you want orange ones, Home Depot sells those! I used to stack my Mackie 1530s on these, and it didn't feel as stable. Another foot would be nice, but then you'd probably need some sort of outriggers for stability. I'm a very happy camper with the DR280s on top of these.

FWIW:
Check with industrial renters:
In Chas. WV I was able to purchase used scaffold for a fraction of the cost of new.
( after rental cycle is complete - old stock is sold )
I bought 5 sections of Waco "red" and 8 wheels.

There is a very thin line between fail and success. It is very thin so, why are you scared???

jayebob- any chance we could see a pic of the hardware that holds your DR's at the proper angle? i know there is a design in the plans, but would like to see how other people are doing this. DR's (probably 4) are in my future, and im debating between tripod stands or scaffold.

Just a 12" long 2X4, shoved far enough under the box to level the front, and the same for the top box. I suppose I could paint them black, or use some black gaff on them, call them Audiologs, and sell them on ebay! The chevron corners and the straps lock them in place. Keep it simple!
