New Beta clones from MCM

#1 Post by SeisTres »

Just got an email from mcm and found this little surprise:
Image
http://www.mcmelectronics.com/product/55-2961

With the xmax and the close spec to the beta and the $15 price, I thought I should let everyone know about these in case someone is thinking about building some cheap jacks. Order four of these and some piezos and you're good to go.

Also, they have the 8" for wedges (or dr200's) http://www.mcmelectronics.com/product/55-2950 for $12 but I didnt' feel like making a separate thread.

Of course, without a response chart, it's still a toss up. But, hey, for that amount of money and those specs, it's a pretty good deal. They seem pretty close to the 1740's that I got for $14 when they were being discontinued.

Since I only ordered one beta8 to build the both boxes, I think I'm going to order 4 10" for replacing any busted 1740's and two of the 8" to load one of the wedges and to have one on hand for replacement.

But hurry, sale ends this weekend i believe.

( you would think I am getting paid to advertise for mcm)

What BFM can be built using them? I sort of wonder about the quality though. I wonder just how far away from spec these are and if the sensitivity is anywhere near as high as the Eminence drivers we usually use. If I were to build a set of DR200's I would probably prefer the recommended drivers given how much work the DR's are... But maybe the jacks are worth it, they're a nice easy build, or at least so I've heard. Any idea on how much the performance on the 10'' MCM would compare to the recommended drivers in a Jack 10? I have been dying for a reason to build some jacks... :!: :!: :!:

I see the 8'' ones as being $10, but maybe I'm just special. 8)

If anything like the 1740's I think they're replacing (which at one point I thought it was the fane sovereign series), they're actually pretty ok and stand up to abuse just fine. A while ago, I made a thread about the 1740's and someone had a graph which got posted but I think the thread got culled. But the point is that it wasn't that bad, and actually having the jacks, they do fine.

However, from someone that had also used the beta, 2510, and the 1740, the results are just as expected: the 1740 could take less watts before hearing it complain, the beta could take more, and the 2510 was the winner in just about everything category.

And yes, I still stand by my recommendation that DR's get the 25xx series and the 3012ho in the larger ones; all folded prosubs still get 30xxlf unless building super slims; but otops and jacks are fine with betas and such drivers. They're such easy and fast builds (and hopefully forgiving on woofer variances :fingers: ) having less than the best in them is no big deal.

However, I doubt they have the rising response and are more like the daytons from PE. But hey, just don't use them in dr's and i think you'll be ok.

I'm waiting to place my order since I'm just waiting to hear back from my friend that was looking for some cheap speaker cabs. If he buys four of these (like me :D ) and builds two j210's, he's going to be set.

I'm interested in picking up a couple if the shipping doesn't kill it - I might throw in one of those cheap plate amps and make a little powered Jack.

PM me!

Looks like I'm going to be spending even more money at mcm, as I'm ordering 4 mcm 8'' for a TT and a T18.

SeisTres, could you PM me the code for the discount down to 15 bucks? Thanks!!! :D

The wedge10's recommended driver is also the 2510 and the beta being the cheaper alternative like the jacks and dr's. So, while I cannot say how well it will work due to the graph not being shown, and probably not having that nice rising response like the eminence drivers, it will work just as well as it will in a jack or dr250.

However, do keep in mind that the wedge10 is a pretty big box and, after building my first wedge, a PITA to build!

But saying all that, my four 10" and two 8" and a some extra accessories should be on their way very soon! :hyper:

And all for the price I would have spent on the beta 8" I still needed and those accessories which I mentioned. Just hope they work :fingers:

For the info. Since I will be ordering from MCM what about the following SLP meter for $19.99
Is this worth using or are the specs too bad ???

http://www.parts-express.com/pe/showdet ... er=390-722 This is the one I'm using but more than likely, those two will identical.

I think that one of these, a cable tester, and a multimeter should be in everyone cable box. While obviously not perfect, it gets the job done. This and my $1.99 multimeter get used quite alot. VERY useful for testing piezos too.

I'm curious as well about using the MCM 55-2961 in a Jack 110. It will be a couple of months before I actually get to start building one, but this deal might be too good to pass up. I also noticed at MCM a good deal on the MCM 55-2972. Here are the T/S parameters if anybody can give some input as to their usability in a Jack 110:

55-2961
Re: 7.2
Le: .989
Fs: 52Hz
Qts: 0.29
Qes: 0.324
Qms: 2.6
Vas: 55.8L
Xmax: 3.5

55-2972
Re: 7.2
Le: .56
Fs: 40
Qts: 0.45
Qes: 0.55
Qms: 2.49
Vas: 82.27L
Xmax: 5

I realize that these are not the ideal drivers for the Jack, but for the price, are either of them usable? And, what will be the result if used? Lower SPL? Poor overall sound? Smoke and fire?

Absolutely useless, as it only has 'A' weighting. Even 'C' weighting is marginal below 50Hz.
As for the drivers, without an SPL chart there's no way to know if they'll work. Only with subs can you rely on T/S specs alone.
