Four Jack Stack

#1 Post by jswingchun »

I finally finished up my stack of four Jack 110's for bass guitar. This isn't really a review, I just wanted to post some pics because I am very happy with how they turned out. They are easily the nicest cabs I have built so far. I will be using them at a show this Friday so I will post on this thread after the show.

The Stack. In the background you can see I still have a paper hanging on the wall with the T39 panel numbers from last summer. You can also see an XF210 waiting to happen.

I used pet screen in the speaker opening. I used the stucco lathe, glued in from behind, in the port openings. I added another disk to the phase plug on the outside to cover up the pet screen. I also like how it looks. I added a little dowel rod where the two horn parts come together for a little detail touch.

Image

I routed recesses into the tops of the cabs for the feet on the cab above to fit into. The recesses are supported by the horn plates in the front and the strips that the back screws into in the back. The recesses interfered with the metal corners, so I ground the corners to match up to the recesses. I like how they came out, it looks kinda different. I don't like the screws in the corners though. I need to get some pan head screws, I think.

I flush mounted the single handle and the jack plates

Built some cables to length and its ready to rock.

It sounded really good blasting in the garage. It is very similar to the Omni 10/Omni 10.5 stack it is replacing, though you couldn't hear the chuffing that the O10 had. I couldn't really hear any extra lows over the O10, but I didn't play with it all that much.

More to come after the show, just wanted to show them off a bit now that they are done...

The cap in the middle of the throat is a nice touch. Looks sharp!

Even pan-head screws on the corners stick up too much for me. The sharp edges on the screw head keep scratching stuff. I switched to pop rivets and am much happier.

He's talking about the extra cap that's on the front side of the phase plug.

and yes... that would be a great place for a logo !!!

Thanks everybody!! Like I said, I am beyond happy with how they came out. The only blunder I made was putting the the recesses in the tops in the path of the steel corners, but I ended up liking how the ground off corners looked anyway. I may be finally getting the hang of building these things. I was almost embarrassed when I took the drivers out of my Omni10 and 10.5. They were a couple of my first builds and they were terrible.

I also like how the extra disk looks on the outside of the phase plug. I thought it would have looked odd having the pet screen over the phase plug and I thought that extra disk on the outside would give it a more finished look and keep the pet screen from vibrating against the phase plug.

If I have to take the backs off sometime I am going to paint the foam that shows in the port hole. Don't know why I didn't do that before.

Bill,

How would it affect the sound if the outside of the cutout in the new Jack baffles was round instead of square?

Quite badly, as you couldn't make an airtight seal between the horn panels and baffle. Square pegs into round holes will not go.

I know if I was making a Jack again I would make some sort of pattern to cut out those holes in the baffle and do it with a router. I hate cutting with a jig saw, even with a guide board. I don't have the newest OT12 plans, is the baffle similar to the Jack baffle? I will probably be building more OT12's next year.

I do have to say that as far as construction itself goes, I really like the phase plug baffle. I thought it was A LOT easier to build then the old style like the Omni 10 I replaced.

What I was thiking was a circle of the same diameter as the throat opening. It would look something like this (thanks for the pic, Leland.)
