Plytanium?
Plytanium?
Does anyone know how plytanium would work and how Duratex may perform on it?
Thanks!

Re: Plytanium?
I've yet to find any Plytanium that isn't warped profusely nor has the required five *even* ply count. Most I've found is four even plies. And it is usually full of huge voids. Not worth it IMHO.

Re: Plytanium?
I've browsed all my local big box lumber yards looking for auraco. All they have is plytanium. I wouldn't use it for a sub floor, let alone a speaker cab.
If it's too loud, you're even older than me! Like me.

I would use it just because of the name
Re: Plytanium?
Copy that...just got back from Lowe's and all that stuff looked really bad. That one one piece of birch plywood that looked great for about $35 for 4x8 1/2 inch...didn't get details on it though...LelandCrooks wrote:I've browsed all my local big box lumber yards looking for auraco. Just come on up here to Suwanee Lumber. Couple hour drive for ya, but maybe you have another excuse to come to the big city... Ikea maybe?
Suwanee Lumber has 5x5 sheets of BB for $20... but I would bet you can find a lumber yard somewhere near you that carries good BB panels. Our Home Depot and Lowes lumber yards in Georgia carry absolute junk. Even the oak panels are terrible.

Re: Plytanium?
+1 - Same here in Jacksonville area. Lots of worthless plywood barely good for building construction, much less fancy cabinet construction. I use a local cabinet maker supplier and he has hooked me up with a good price.bzb wrote:Our Home Depot and Lowes lumber yards in Georgia carry absolute junk. Even the oak panels are terrible.
Don't buy it. If it is anything like the birch plywood here at Lowe's in Jacksonville, it is likely to be the cheap chinese veneered stuff. Has a paper thin veneer that is useless for butt joints like in Bill's cabs. It also doesn't have equal plies.doncolga wrote:That one one piece of birch plywood that looked great for about $35 for 4x8 1/2 inch...didn't get details on it though...
As per the plans, find something with at least five equal plies and you'll be good to go. It doesn't have to be baltic birch or even birch, just five equal plies with minimal warp and voids so as to have sufficient strength.

That Suwanee site looks really good and that seems like a great price. I've contacted lumber/cabinet places in Savannah, GA and I'm waiting to hear back from them. I'll probably use my lunch tomorrow to visit the local family owned lumber yard. They told me today they didn't have and probably couldn't get BB, but I'd like to see what they do have. I'm really surprised at the number of lumber businesses there are in the area...had no clue. I'll be checking with some more close locals tomorrow.

Seriously, though, if you can't find anything in your area, try SC. I used to drive just across the border up 85 for the hookup on choice walnut and cherry boards. If all else fails, try to get up here to Suwanee. If you can't make it during their bankers hours, let me know if you want me to pick up a few sheets - I live about 5 minutes away.
As far as what the local spot has - birch is great, just stay away from any furniture grade stuff. Almost guaranteed to have a razor thin outer layer of whatever species (oak, walnut, etc). They might have fir or poplar that would work, just have to make sure it's 5+ equal plies like everyone's said previously.

I have a source in Savannah, GA (about 45 min away) who has 5x5 1/2" BB for $26.30 per sheet...that's reasonable isn't it? I'm waiting to hear from some others today.
Thanks!

Sounds pretty good to me. I'm spoiled with my $19-22 per sheet price. There are a lot of guys on here that are paying WAY more.doncolga wrote:Hey,
