Thanks Bill and everyone - TLAH Pro !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

#1 Post by Cjeff »

Just finished my TLAH Pro build. Well almost - got to mount them and put on the grills.

Loud? IN a A/B test the old 12" speakers where clipping red and the TLAH Pro was just blinking low green.

Clear? Oh yeah, heard the music like never before, that is with 5 different people listening at different times.

Bass? Not bad at all. I am not going to say chest thumping bass. When I leaned them up against the sound booth wall in testing, the sound booth was vibrating! Is was clear and clean.

Coverage? uh huh. With them on chairs leaning up against the sound booth we walked around and listened. The coverage was nice and even.
Actually even laying down on top of chairs facing the ceiling they were amazing, how the heck is that? :o

I hope to mount them tomorrow and get some pics.

Thanks Bill, Leland and everyone else who helped.

I think about 4 Wedgehorns are next, I had considered buying monitors but if they are anywhere near as amazing as the TLAH Pro I will be way better off to build them.

Hah! You finally reached the end of your build! Glad to hear the good review, too.
And as for WH, most definitely go for it.

:loler: Yeah build took longer than expected. It's mazing how not having the right screws or altering the depth on the piezo's can set you back a week each time. I also work two jobs so had to fit these in where I could.

I could build another set in 2 to 3 8 hour days I think. 8)

Got them mounted and hooked up.
Awesome! :!:

Very even coverage by ear and by SPL meter, need to run tone through them and check again.

Not as feedback resistant as I had hoped. Unfortunately our piano is under one speaker and sometimes people will stand by the piano and under the speaker and sing. Not bad if they hold the mic right but if they are more then a foot away from the mic it seems as if it will feed back as you push up the gain to compensate for the bad mic technique.
You can bring the highs down a little and it does help.

They look awesome, nice and sleek, way better than the old speakers hanging off of the wall.

If you want a good installed speaker consider these. I am very happy.
I was the one who found this site and suggested we build these, Now that they are great I am relieved.
My neck was kinda on the line, so to speak.

Easy fix: teach them that the mic must be no more than 6 inches away. :cop:

Not so easy :wall: :wall: :chainsaw:

As far as the mount -
After using sketchup and looking at the angles I realized that the sound would hit the front row between at about 5 feet off the ground. 1/2 way between sitting in the chair and standing. Also realized they would just hit the front of the stage. So figured no big deal and went real 'High Tech'.
A piece of plywood inside at the top glued and screwed, then a 1/2" piece of ply screwed to the back with 1" above to top of the cabinet. Predrilled holes so easy to put screws through it and into the wall. 2 guys held them up and I screwed using a long reach driver to get over the top of the cabinet. I used to install cupboards that are heavier when loaded with dishes and such, with just 4 screws. So i figure 3 in the plywood plate into the wall would be plenty.

Using an SPL meter (and by ear) the sound on the platform behind the field of coverage is almost the same as in the coverage. So tweaking for perfect coverage to me is not a big deal.

You may want to look into a feedback destroyer. I've used several of these, Behringer has 3 or 4 different units that do this pretty well. The Shark is the cheapest, but poorest quality. I like the DEQ2496, because it has a nice graphic EQ, analyzer, and parametric EQ/notch filters. They have some other rack-mounted units that only do the notch filters/PEQ, and those should do just fine too. You're probably only going to be notching about 3 or 4 frequencies.

When you set it up, go ahead and lock in the frequencies you need to notch, then turn the auto-search mode off. If you go with the DEQ, let it do the auto-EQ on your room, then set up your notch filters.

Another "cheat" is to to run stereo, and just pan the mics slightly to the other side. Between all of these fixes, you should have no problems.
99% of the time, things that aren't already being done aren't being done because they don't work. The other 1% is split evenly between fools and geniuses.

I'm glad the cabs worked out good for you. How does the congregation like them, re:looks, and sound quality?

Only a handful have seen them, or heard them about 10 people. So far so good all like the sleek look instead of the big old cabinet hanging off the wall. And those who have heard them think they are great.

Used them today for the first time.
Overall very good comments. Many liked the sound, A couple said they sounded 'Hollow" or "tinnie" Maybe I need to break them in more? Just put on music and let it play all week days with no one here? That is what a guy who was here who is a DJ said. (Son of a regular attender, who was visiting.)

As far as looks, they are real nice, sleek units. We choose black as we are repainting the church in earth-tones and thought white would not look good. They 'frame' the platform well.

Sorry this is blurred

Not sure why it flips these two sideways

I had to shorten them to 56" and went with 6 of the Eminence Alpha 8 drivers.
The price was real close to 8 of the 6" drivers and the 8" will give me better bass.
"The cab will work down to around 60 Hz or so, meaning that in many applications you’ll be able to get by without a sub."
Actually when you crank them you can feel the bass. Not a punch in the chest but not bad.

I also cut and glued the piezo's for a " multi element single mouth tweeter horn". which according to the plans
"Eliminating the frames between the piezo tweeters gives better integration of their wave fronts for flatter response."

Are they pointed directly-at-the-listeners in the vertical plane? A laser pointer taped along the edge of a combination or try square, then swept from side to side will give you a visual idea of the spread those arrays. They could've been off-axis and out of the zone.

Have they been RTA/EQ'd for the room? If so what some may call 'tinny' is highs that they never heard before.
