Crown XLS Drivecore Amps...anyone used 'em yet?

#1 Post by Bruce Weldy »

I'm about to pull the trigger on an XLS 1000 (bridged for subs) and an XLS 1500 (OTops with 2512s on one side, monitors on the other)

Anybody tried 'em out yet?

6 - T39 3012LF
4 - OT12 2512
1 - T24
1 - SLA Pro
2 - XF210

I haven't run them yet, I have looked them over pretty good. Drop me a line. I'll even preset the amplifiers for whatever bfm cabs you're running.

You must voltage limit them with your system. The can only have 1 filter per channel, either hp or lp. I can't do that ahead of time. I can preset everything else.

I got a XLS1000 to power my THTLP, but I've only run it for 10 minutes to test 30hz sine waves. The fan never kicked on but I was only outputting 13 volts. It's very small, shorter and lighter than home theater receivers. It almost feels like a toy, but it seems to be just what I needed for a HT sub amp.

Oh and yeah there's an internal crossover, but I'm going to bypass that and use my CX3400 so I can HP and LP-
1x THTLP -- one will do for now i suppose...

Well, I placed my order to buy the XLS1000 to run subs (bridged) and the XLS1500 to run Otops off one side and monitors off the other.

It will be replacing 2- QSC GX5s and an old Behringer. Trading about 110 pounds for 17....rack just got a little lighter!

The savings in weight with these amps is great. Setting and and tearing down will be much easier. I am very curious to see how well they preform with subs. I am old school, light weight and the ability to drive subs were contradictory. On the other hand these new light weight amps opened up a great opportunity for me to get started with some of my own gear. I just bought 2 XLS amps, a 402 and a 602 for $425 total :hyper: If you search you can find awesome deals on the older XLS line. In the future if things go well I will look into lighter amps.

I feel like these will be decent home theater amps. Its not like anyone listens to HT at WAR VOLUME, so limiting shouldnt be an issue, and you dont *need* to hp the THT as long as you eq 22hz (max excursion point) down as far as you can with a high Q.... I think?

I sure hope that they are more than HT amps. I'm planning to run T39s and OT12s with them.

Why would they be any less appropriate for live sound than the Peavey IPRs? They are a lightweight amp also. Or, even the XTIs?

only 1 filter per channel, less EQ than XTI, no limiting.

I've heard sketch things about the IPRS... but I cant actually back it up.

Does anyone know what the Peakx limiters in the new XLS series do? Do they actually limit voltage to the speaker, or are they just a psuedo-limiter?

PROBABLY A GOOD question for the Crown forums.I'm sure one of their techs would chime in.

As far as being a good HT sub amp, they are quite adequate. I've run mine for hours and I still haven't heard the fan turn on. I don't have any of the internal DSP's operating though-

they seem 2B better for tops than subs and for DJs better than for live sound an xti will do better on subs cause of the filtering and limiting capabilities
There is a very thin line between fail and success. It is very thin so, why are you scared???

MADE
4- OT12'S BETAII
4 T39'S 20" 3012LF LOADED
ON THE BENCH: 2 OT212

I'm only interested in the power amp capabilities - not the DSP, as I already have those covered. So, other than DSP is there any reason why you think they wouldn't be good for live sound?

Nope.

I've been putting together kits with XLS for tops and XTI for subs.
