So last night a little miscommunication between my drummer and me ended up in neither of us bringing tops. I thought he was bringing his powered JBL’s (EON’s) and I was supplementing them with a couple T39’s because the bar is on the small side, while he thought I was bringing my half rig with my OTop212’s (DeltaPro). So there we were with 2 T39’s (24xdual HL10c), two wedgehorn8’s, two power amps (500wattsRMS/8ohm/chan) and processing (DEQ and DCX 2496’s) with me mixing from stage, somewhat isolated inside inears. (what?)
Subs, monitors, no tops, and it’s almost time to start.
This is a really good crowd drawing power trio doing Hendrix, Stevie, Buddy covers with some other left turn stuff here and there.
There was barely time to set up and play, if you’ve ever experienced one of those places that won’t let you load in any gear until 8:30 and then they want you to start at 9:30 sharp. There’s no run home in that program.
So as you may have guessed one of the wedgehorn’s had to volunteer for the job and up on a milk crate it went atop the two T39’s in a nice, tidy monostack. I didn’t even make any crossover or main EQ adjustments, just plugged it in and went with it. I used my normal small/med bar input of kick, bass, guitar and the three vocals. The instruments were in full as usual.
As I was just finishing plugging in the nights load of cables my guitar player walked over and introduced me to a long time friend who turned out to be a FOH man for various nationals and I thought, great, this is not what I would choose to impress this guy. I explained our dilemma and he agreed it looked bleak but there was no other option and we just had to go with it.
To get to the point it turned out to be jaw droppingly amazing. I couldn’t believe it, no one could believe it. During the first break I went to that sound guy and asked what he thought of the sound, balance etc. and what would he recommend. He said “it sounds perfect and I can’t believe it.” He kept saying it over and over shaking his head. Then I said, by the way, that’s only a single 8 inch stamped basket Eminence driver in there as I pointed to the Wedgehorn. “Stop” he says, “you’re killing me, I can’t believe how perfect it sounds.” He said to change nothing so I didn’t. Everyone said the same thing. The bar paid us extra (just shy of double!!) at the end because they did so well.
On the way out my drummer says, dude, those things are amazing, why don’t you just bring two of those from now on and not mess with those big heavy ones.
Bill’s designs never cease to amaze me.

Well I hope you don’t mind if I show you a few family photos, I probably get this from my dad as he was relentless with the Kodak Carousel slide projector. Just so you know the blue blood lineage a shot not only of the parents but of that magical moment. I wasn’t thinking and left these two WH10’s (who I thought were to young to do this sort of thing) alone, for an entire weekend.

When I came back I found them like this, a newbie in the belly of the mother and the father passed out face down on the left there. Like any parent I was reluctant at first, you know all the responsibilities that come with a newborn, but that goes away quickly when you realize, holy crap I have a new WH8!! What’s better than that?

OK here’s a father and son shot. My dad would’ve shown you 3 more slides of the EXACT same shot so I’ll spare you that.

After several weeks of private tutoring and finishing school, here’s his first day in public. This is the little fellow that carried the night.
