Duratex question

#1 Post by Kevin James »

Sorry if this is in the wrong area. Not sure where to put this thread.

I need to do some finish touch ups on a couple of my Tuba 36's tomorrow for a gig. Cabs were coated in Duratex. I didn't build them, I bought them from Blades 976 aka John when he was an authorized builder. At the time he gave me a decent size silver can of Duratex for touch ups.

What I want to know is, how can I tell if this Duratex is the spray grade or the roll on grade? I think its spray as it looks like he sprayed the cabs but not 100% sure. I'm going to Sears to buy a Hopper gun but I'm wondering what the main difference is with the spray grade vs the roll on grade and if the roll on grade would cause any problems in a hopper gun.

Spray is thinner than roller. If it's really thick you can thin it a little with water. Just try a little on a test piece.

I rolled a little spray grade to finish a little stand I built, but didn't feel like firing up my gun to do it. Worked fine, just took my time and rolled it nice and easy.

How about the opposite? Can roller grade be sprayed with a touch of water to thin it?

It can, but not as effectively as spray grade can be rolled. Spray grade is ground slightly finer. I keep a box of disposable chip brushes around the shop for touchups. Dab it with the brush, you can emulate rolled or sprayed pretty easily.

OK cool. Thanks guys. I think what I have is the spray grade but I will mix a little water in if its too thick.

I bought a hopper gun last night but I can't seem to find any info on how you clean the thing after use. What do you guys do to clean your hopper gun after using Duratex in it?

Just make sure you clean it right away before the stuff hardens

Good point. That stuff hardens fast.
