Twin J110 's

#1 Post by loupey »

Hi everyone,

Thought I'd make a short post about my 2 J110's! It sure beats anything I've had to date in sound quality. All those 15's and 12's I had in various configs never quite had the balance of frequencies and tone I wanted. CLEAR sound is mainly what I was after, and after a long time I began hypothesizing that that speaker systems are the most neglected part of overall sound, at least for the bass guitar. I just felt a good set of speakers would get me further to tone happiness than an amp. Long story short, I decided that I wanted a DIY horn load speaker system.

So here I am. :hyper:

The remnants of a Carvin PB150 (150W @ 4 ohms, 100W @ 8ohms) are used in the setup, i.e., the PS10 speaker is on the top box, and a new 2510 in the bottom. After much debate, tweeter were not used but can easily be added later, hence, the gap in the grill mount on one box. Obviously, I know what the recommended driver is :horse: but a "free" speaker made by Eminence, already broken in, and $110 used elsewhere is a win-win situation for me. It's a better choice than an Eminence CA2010 Basslite I have and want to sell.

The sound from these Jacks are clear and balanced in bass guitar use. My EQ approach has changed dramatically, even from 1 J110 to 2. 1 J110 needs some low end boost and sounds great, but a bit lacking mid clarity (that's with the 2510). I figured that's because the mids are now buried a bit from the low end boost. With 2 jacks, ah, it truly sounds magnificent. I now roll the bass off and now the sound gorgeous, clear, and responsive. Even if I did not roll the bass off, it still sounds superb but I do not want to have a ton of rumble in my sound since it detracts from the clarity, and in my case robs me of needed power. By rumble, I mean <50Hz, probably lower, that creates a "cloud" of bass that never seems to change in pitch. Bill has said several times that the power band of bass is like (guessing) 60-120Hz, so trying to get sub bass out of a bass setup is not only demanding on a setup but will tend to cause everyone else to turn up. Anyway.... :noob:

Thank you to everyone sharing your experiences, expertise, pictures, and being generous with your work, Bill. I have no intention on ever buying a commerical cab again!

And another good review! C'est bon! That's good! Are you going to put grills on? The cabs are two-tone aren't they?

Indeed, grills x 2! ReliableHardware.com HQ is close so I look forward to picking a couple grills one day soon.

And yes, it's 2-tone, more by accident/laziness/cheap, not by design. After fumbling with carpeting I gave up and thought Duratex was the way to go. Only problem: I could not justify $60 of Duratex (w/shipping) right now as I am surrounded by 3 5-gallon buckets of paint & primer and a house waiting to be painted. I figured if I primed with latex I could live with that until I can spring for Duratex.

So I got a gallon of BIN primer tinted black, and grey is the result. That stuff sticks to everything...hard time getting it off my hands. And I should have known that hitting Arauco with water based anything will result in raised grain and so that made me throw 6 coats at it to smooth it out (w/sanding in between). With a smooth finish the final coat made a fine raised finish similar to tolex. This primer is dead flat and gets scufffed very easily so I buffed it (no polish, just lots of elbow grease) to a soft sheen. I also decided since I used Arauco that no matter what I finish it with that the cabs will get dented so why not spare myself the expense of Duratex and use an easily obtainable finish @ $13/gal?

I never wanted to Duratex the throat area since it should not see any abuse (grills were always in my plan) and so that is painted with black enamel semi-gloss. Besides, it looked like a real pain to paint by hand. I actually was going to put a 3rd color (and more) in the throat area on different panels and vent (to preserve the perception of depth and show off the uniqueness of the cab design) but it was too much work to consider a reality for my first build.

Haha, OK. Hopefully you won't need to use too much more elbow grease.

Wanted to show that faux grain look, though, considering latex is not too hardy a finish, it may not matter. At least it's easy to touch up and refinish. No harm done.

Few more shots. The Carvin PS10 loaded in this Jack is vintage 1993, reportedly an Eminence Beta10, or something close. Oh, and the foam is held in place firmly by friction; glued on the back panel only. It's 2" foam from Amazon.com (33x72, iirc), I think ~$34 delivered but now cheaper due to different shipping.

Thank you, Grey Owl.

I'd love to take at least some credit for the 2-tone look but it was the last thing I intended. This was supposed to be the cheap pre-Duratex finish only, but built it up as the final finish to save some $$$. Plus, it is so cheap a finish that I won't  if I sand it down and try another coating.

But again, I tip my hat off to all who have posted pictures, no matter how good or bad they thought it looked like, and taken time to write. It made this project reachable. Oh, and that Bill guy too. :cowboy:
