folded horn for 4 to 8 15s

#1 Post by Carlos Alexis »

I went to the website that has some folded horn designs, but I believe that the aplication I need it'smore complicated than building (4) to (8) Tubas or HD 15 horns. Maybee not... but some advice is needed to be able to make an informed desition.

Here is our dilema...

We're working in a special proyect and we need to get louder than (4) eaw bh760. Its for a special kind of competitions of car audio and the loudest guy here has four of those boxes in the back of his sprinter van.

We can get any eminence, beyma, b&c, DD etc woofer, but we need to have something to outplay those 8 12's. The meter is placed @ 10ft and he does 142+ all the time.

Our system will consist of (8) Eminence S2005 drivers, (3) Community M4 drivers and the (8) 15's.

We have an opening of 63"wide x 21" high for the opening of the horn. from those 21" the opening closes to 49" at the top, where it measures 49" high, but there is where the drivers will be placed in custom mad horns.

We expect to get 143 dbs from the M4's, 146 dbs from the S2005's and above 145 dbs from the folded horn. We might even do just a huge bass horn with as many woofers we can fit, but efficiency and loudness is the main goal.

If anybody can help us it will be greatly apreciated.

At what frequency? Or is it just recorded music?
If it's too loud, you're even older than me! Like me.

Used to be about 63 hz was the right frequency. The numbers that he is giving for DB is rather low by todays standards. 2-18's in a front loaded box will get you more than that. A little more info is needed, such as amp power vehicle size etc...

2 FI BTL 18" in a ported box dumped full of power will yield you more than that 142....

One 15 in a bandpass will get you more than that, at one frequency. :hyper:
But it will have nothing everywhere else. :wall:
OP, to answer your question we need to know the exact measurement protocols. BTW, one BH760 should be able to reach 142dB in a van.

Buy a clapped-out CV EL-36, pull the driver out, throw a brick or two of Black Cats in the chamber, and let it rip. It is a dB drag race after all.

If you don't care about the car, you could substitute a stick of dynamite for the Black Cats. You would win, I guarantee it.

If I was to try to play as loud as possible in a car I would first try to find the car's resonant frequency and then tune a ported cab/bandpass cab/tapped horn to be loudest at that single frequency. I would go for a tapped horn but that's often too hard for most guys to design. Go for a bandpass/ported cab if you can't design a tapped horn.

So the competition is how much bass is outside the vehicle?

You guys got it all wrong!

It is not for db drag. There I have compited since 1998 and I have done 165+ with normal interior and 178+ in extreme.

I am talking about getting loud with pro sound equipment to the outside. imagine a huge basshorn with 5 wheels. Thats what I'm talking about.

It needs to play music.

It will have 4 community m4's and 8 eminence s2005 drivers in custom horns.

I just need a horn, or folded horn that will do 145+ and will have a mouth or 63 wide x 22 tall.

Thanks in advance.

This has already been done before. Some metal sculpture guy built one on a trailer. Pictures of the thing elude me right now.

In that case, any short horn with a long excursion driver would get you plenty of noise. Any requirements of how deep it has to go?
I did a quick google search on the drivers that you have on hand and as I've understood it they're all compression drivers?
