Wedgehorn 8's..good AND light!

Just finished 2 wedgehorn 8's. Haven't done a show with them yet. I have used them for practice and they do "cut" as advertised. My old monitors were 15 inch two ways that I had built some years ago when I though everything had to be 3/4inch and weigh a ton. My back and my ears are very happy I found this site!

The W8's took a little getting used to at first, but from what I've read here on the forum I knew that I wasn't looking for "full" I was looking for my voice to come through what can sometimes be a loud stage.

I went so far as to set up the Titans and Otops in my garage like I was doing a show and experimented with what the W8's give me with and without the FOH on. Of course I wasn't at war volume, but it helped me to better understand that you need to take into account the monitors AND what you hear off the fronts together as I've read on other posts.
Very sweet when the fronts "color" up the sound a little while the mons are so clear you hear every mistake! I must say that the more I played/sang through them the better I liked them with the fronts or not.

Our next show isn't for a couple weeks. I'm excited to give them a try in real world conditions!
BTW I used the Beta 8 with both filters...

I know "no pictures didn't happen" ,but I forgot to tell my wife to snap the wedgehorns last night at our first show using them.

We have me on the left, the female lead singer center, and guitar player on the right across the front of the stage. Our old mons were three two way 15's I had built a long time ago. (see above post). The lead singer always had trouble hearing herself.

When we set up last night I got several raised eyebrows and funny looks when I carried in the two tiny monitors that were to take the place of 3 BIG ones...The pressure was on.

Well, I just have to say that these two little boxes are a PERFECT fit for how we use them. We run mainly only our vocals through that monitor channel with maybe just a little guitar. (I am lucky enough to play with guitar player NOT trying to make me deaf!) The other channel is for the drummer and he has a little of everything going through his.

During the soundcheck the lead singer was amazed that she could whisper and hear herself like never before! I spaced one two feet to her left (my side) and the other a couple feet to her right (guitar player's side). The three of us could hear our vocals absolutely clear and crisp. Three part harmony was right there and easier to hit when it's that clear!!

At the end of the night our singer couldn't thank me enough for the monitor upgrade! That and the EASY load in and out of these little rascals made last night a great success!

So, as with my Titans, Otops, and J212 (for bass), I must again thank Bill, Leland and so many others on this site for sharing knowledge that can let someone like myself in a small band, on a small budget, running the sound from the stage sound so much better than we could have before. Not to mention using less power and hauling less weight!

Also my first cabs to use Speakon connectors...Don't know what took me so long on that.

Still amazed and thrilled that two small wedgehorns have taken the place of the 3 we used to use. It is a joy to grab one in each hand and go!

I put them together when we're on a elevated stage and I can center them. I have found that if I have to put them to one side or the other I don't like the "feel". I don't know if it's a timing issue or what.

Before I get blasted let me say that I very much prefer to center cluster the Titans and put the tops on poles and I do so as much as possible. Yes I've read the placement stickies. Yes I know that sub freq's are NOT directional. I'm just saying that as a musician I don't like the feel I get from the FOH when they are on the side.

I'm in trouble now aren't I ?

Oneplaybass, I do the same as much as possible. I too prefer the sound of a center cluster than the side ones.
SO if it is wrong, well sue me. My ears don't lie.
But before you sue me teach me how to put them off the side properly.

Just to the right out of the picture is where tables started. The people there would not be happy. I've had that happen before with the "subs on the side". Patrons go to the club owner/manager and say "These big boxes are killing me over here!" At the same, the distance to the other Otop is quite far and I don't like the way it sounds on that side of the dance floor when my bass crosses from the tops to the bottom.

Anyway, I know it's not ideal, but it just works better for me in situations when I can't center them
and I should add that's smallish places where the Titans aren't straining. In a big room where I need every ounce out of them would be different, but then again the big rooms usually have the elevated stage.

Maybe the ideal in these smallish places is to only take one Titan to the gig? No split subs less gear to haul. Just thinkin' out loud...

We actually did that once in a very small place and it worked pretty well. Better with the recorded music during the breaks than the live part IMO though.

I just like the way my bass crosses when the lows and tops are on the same plane and the subs are even right to left. Maybe it's just me. If the subs are all left or all right or back it doesn't sound right to me. I have no data to back that up other than years of playing and sense of what I want my bass to sound like....but of course the center cluster is my favorite!!
