Getting PL offa the hands

#1 Post by Frankenspeakers »

I have been finishing up a TT couple of panels a day, lots of PL on every seam, using fingers to smooth the seams... no problem. I just use a rag with a little bit of mineral spirits (paint thinner) to get the worst - usually gets everything. What is left comes off with IPA (Isopropyl Alcohol 99%) if you can't get IPA, regular rubbing alcohol should work. Ace hardware stores sell IPA, Walgreens sells both 90% and 70% rubbing alcohol. Works great, just don't drink the stuff!
There is no technical problem however complex, that cannot be solved or finessed by a direct application of brute strength and ignorance.

I have a supply of plastic picnic knives that I use for spreaders. Toss when done.

Plastic gloves are helpful, but annoying.

Also popsicle sticks as spreaders, cleanup tools. Cut in half, you get two longish straight edges, a squarish end for cleaning pl from corners, and a rounded end for, among other things, making fillets along "show" joints.

An oldtimer once told me to rub in some oily hand lotion (bag balm, cornhusker lotion, etc) every time before heading to the shop. Unlotioned skin on the hands allows PL to make a strong bond with moisture in the skin. That oily topcoat resists most of the PL adhesion to your hands. I still try to avoid touching the PL directly, but some contact is unavoidable.

I've been feeling a little bit strange lately. Definately not flu symptoms so I might be blaming the PL.

Jeez... Jim Morrison is dead. That isn't a fun moment.

Dare I ask the significance of one "Jim Mossison"? Is this a local perachial entity?

Lead singer of the vastly overrated Doors. Died of drugs in very early seventies. "Light My Fire", "People are Strange" etc.

(Now wearing flame suit)
If it's too loud, you're even older than me! Like me.

You're too young. Yes, the last two alblums weren't much, but the first broke a lot of new ground. I was 16, it was one of those 'holy crap!' records the first time you heard it. Easily one of the 20 most influential alblums of the '60s.

Ok, with you all now.

That would have made me 14 at the time Bill - a huge age difference at that stage of life.

I do remember the Doors and Light my Fire. You are right, that particular song was as stunning as hearing Cream for the first time.

I reckon Jose Feliciano made a far better job of the Light my Fire song though, and to make myself even more unpopular, I have to say I found the Doors quite depressing. Hence my not remembering the individuals.
