I'd say that's borderline. My preference is to leave them unblocked.
Hey Bill thanks for the reply. I will have to rethink my approach on this then. Maybe I will rebuild the frames to have the ports open.

Re-designed the speaker grille frames and moving forward. Somewhat unorthodox clamping methods but it is getting the job done.

Some nearly eight months later and I am just now finishing these cabinets. Today I wrapped up the speaker grill cloth and installed them using brass screws with silver ferrules. The backs of the frames have thick felt attached using staples which will hopefully dampen any vibrations and prevent them from rattling.
I should have some better shots next week as Scott Huff of Colorship Media, who designed and applied the wraps, will be taking some much more professional quality shots for his web page and I will post those up as soon as I have them.
Again, I wanted to thank all the kind and unbelievably patient members of the forum here who answered inane questions, gave sage advice, and provided encouragement along the way. Very special thanks to Bill for designing and providing the plans and for being accessible for novice builders.

Cut the corners at a 45 to follow the ports and make the grill octagonal.
