Oh yeah, I've using something like a pre-stain when staining in the past. Going for 100% clear with these though.

Wow, awesome build. I love the walnut corner pieces.

I used General Finishes satin clear for mine. I didn't love the finish, compared to the minwax water based I am used to using, but it'll do.

I had a similar feeling about Davids too, but after building these I think I love it.

I finally wrapped up fabrication of my Davids and brought them home. I'm blown away at how amazing they sound. I still have to run through some checks (per the instructions), but damn, these are amazing. Soon I'll measure them and post the charts. Last coat of General Finishes satin clear. I tried to add some space and re-orient the coils ... ? I used strips of velcro to attach the crossover to the cabinet so it will be easy to remove if I have to make changes. It's very secure and keeps down anything from vibrating. They're home.

Ha, yes I switched them but no difference in sound quality.

I've spent a lot of time listening to these now and I'm very happy with the sound. Definitely one of the best sounding experiences I've ever had (but that isn't saying much....). They bring a new life and clarify to all of my favorite recordings. Some favorites are:

Low's 2018 record 'Double Negative' also sounds insane.

My only gripe is I feel they lack a bit of the 'punch' I want when listening to house and disco. I've started taking some measurements and comparing my room (which is far from ideal) to others to pinpoint what my ears aren't getting. My guess is the 4" mid-ranges can't deliver the feeling I'm looking for, but I could be wrong. When measuring I have all of the EQ flat, but when I'm listing I usually have my Sansui 8080 set up +4 on the bass. Here's my first measurement chart:

Also, some friends and I host a listening party every few weeks and we've been using these speakers. We pop-up in different spots, which is nice to be able to hear how they sound in different rooms.
Obviously we don't have much acoustic treatment for these popups (although the first one was at a recording studio so we rolled some gobos in.

I just took a few more measurements in my living room.
One from where I sit and listen to music and one from where I'm standing and mixing. Similar graphs for both.
The two dips in the low-end I see, one around 55 hz and one around 85 hz are what I think I want to fill in. Until I can determine if it's in the speakers or the room I guess there's not much I can do about it.

Next, I'll bring a speaker so another location and get a near-field measurement. I think there's too much going on (reflection wise) in my living room to get a decent near-field measurement.

It's likely to be the room(s), but remove a variable or two.
Unless the LF is coupled, it is likely to lose some content due to cancellation based on distance apart for the cabs.
And since chest thump is in that 50-70Hz kick drum region, any dips there could explain what you're experiencing.

Here's another way to identify what you're thinking is lacking.

Go back to those songs, and rather than play them via the Davids, analyse them with, say Audacity (search the net on how to use Audacity to determine content).
If the frequency response in the region measured in room is different to that displayed in content in audacity, then that helps determine the next steps (which is to remove the deficits without creating others at different frequencies)...
