Well after thinking this wouldn't work, I've returned to it after this time with a solution. I'm about to strip the carpet on the rack, Duratex it and put on new hardware. That rack has sentimental value for me as my folks got it for me years ago when I first started gigging. Would be great to see it really cleaned up and actually using it.

What did you use to remove the carpet adhesive? I'm working on removing some carpet to duratex a speaker cabinet myself.

LOL! This has taken a back seat to moving, flooring, quarter round trim, painting, etc...

An orbital sander with a medium grit paper works pretty well for this. You'll go through a lot of paper though, and some adhesives will melt if they heat up, so you have to keep moving around.

I have a finishing sander (Makita) and it doesn't seem to be doing much with 150 grit.

What if you just bondo the whole cab to smooth it out, sand the bondo smooth, then duratex over that?

Well, It's not the smoothness that's a problem. I'm scraping and sanding and pulling the leftover hairs off. The problem is it's still sticky. I tested some spray paint on it, to see how it works. It will probably be straight enough for Duratex. I don't think I would enjoy Bondo'ing a whole cab, I don't have the experience or tools to make it straight and nice.

Have you tried a heat gun and a scraper or putty knife? Then some 60 grit.

Or if your more adventurous with chemicals.
Get a heap of acetone and apply liberally then scrape off with above mentioned scraper.
ps wear rubber gloves and a mask with chemical filter

Go with 60 grit on a random orbital.

Here's the set of pics including the back:

The right angle cables fixed it and the power *just* did fit. I'd like to add a power and speakon panel (like Bruce's) on the back. Doesn't seem like a big deal but multiplied over lots of load in's, digging in the rack as little as possible is nice.
I've got all the new hardware on (new wheels, latches, hinges and screws). I'll be adding new corners and possibly handles too.
Nice to bring this thing back and it should load in and out quicker than my split racks (previously this was three separate pieces). This was my very first rack when I was in high school like 23 years ago. It's seen LOTS of gigs.
