Subs should be touching (or within 6" mouth to mouth), or more than 2 wavelengths apart. At 40Hz, one wavelength is 28ft, and two wavelengths is 56ft.

Tops should be touching (or within 1" piezo to piezo - which still means touching since the top & bottom panels are 1/2" ply) or more than 2 wavelengths apart horizontally. At 100Hz one wavelength is 11.3ft, and two wavelengths is 22.5ft.

So... why the advice to separate the subs?

If the room/venue is 60 feet or wider separating the subs by at least 50 feet will often give a more uniform SPL throughout, but if you can't separate them by that much the result will usually be less uniform SPL.
