Jack plate sealing question

#1 Post by kynetx »

Do I have to worry about air leaks with a 2xSpeakon plate - should I use a sealant around the connectors?

Depends on the cab and the placement of the Jack. In a DR the Jack is often (usually/always?) mounted on a panel on the back that is isolated from the driver chamber so there is no need to seal it. On a Titan (and perhaps other subs) it should be sealed unless it is behind one of the small braces joining the top or bottom and back, in which case it is again isolated and doesn't require sealing.

In general I don't think most folks bother with sealant around the speakon jacks, regardless of where the jack plate is located.

Every time I've purchased a jack plate, I also purchase the gasket that goes with it. Aside from that, however, I've never done any type of sealing around my jacks or plates on any of the cabs I've built.

You have to seal if the back of the plate is in the driver chamber or the horn path. That's true for most BFM cabs. A couple exceptions are a DR when you put the plate between the butt cheeks and a Titan when you put the plate behind the top or bottom reflector.

You can use the custom gasket for your plate or the same gasket material you use to seal the driver access hole.

I don't use jack plates, but I make my own gaskets from construction paper for the recessed handles I install. It's thin, yet thick enough to seal.

i dont even seal the 1/4" jacks as the mayority of air force gets out from the port(s) and the jacks are sealed with the plugs there s no big deal
There is a very thin line between fail and success. It is very thin so, why are you scared???
