Titan48 grill?
Titan48 grill?
Just wondering if anyone is aware of places to get metal grills - I would like to be able to have a metal grill covering the horn mouth of the Titan48, and also a grill over some DR cabs when I eventually get to building those.
Is there an easy way to do this and have it look reasonably professional? I like the idea of the grill to keep people from grabbing the braces on the T48, and also in the case of a DR cab to protect the array of piezos.
Any thoughts? How do the pro manufacturers do it, and is it feasible for me?
Cheers
Jeff

I have just taken delivery of 4 Grills for my DR290's.
I ordered them from Penn fabrications who had them cut, bent and powder coated for approx £14 each plus tax & shipping
They look absolutely stunning. I will try and post some photos of the finished cabs later this week.
The way I have mounted these is to extend the side horn braces to the front of the cab so the grills are screwed to these and also mount small lugs at each corner of the DR mouth to offer further fixing points to the sides.
As all my cabs have castors I also always put a transit cover over the grills to protect them from things being loaded on the grills. These are a simple push fit 6-10mm MDF panel, fixed simply with 4 small pieces of black velcro to stop them coming loose in the van.
I also glue black very low mass acoustic speaker foam to the inside face of the grills using a spray on adhesive to stop the beer monsters..
This is a photo of my DR290's. My grills are set back by about 10mm to allow a transit panel to be fitted.

David,
That looks EXACTLY like what I am looking for. Not only for protection, I find a nice looking grill gives a cabinet a much more "pro" look. I think it is only fair to Bill to represent his cabinets in as professional of a manner as we can visually. Please post your photos when you are done. Seeing people come up with pro-looking boxes will only help to boost Bill's reputation. We know that Bill designs great boxes, but the average band probably has no clue. Looks and roadworthiness are important. Appearances make a big difference with people, even though the box may sound the same.
From a DR visual perspective, I would think it would be nice as it would somewhat conceal the piezo's, thus leaving the owner with less times having to "prove the cabinet's worth" sonically speaking to the naysayers. Most people would never even notice, and thus if you wanted to shock them after the fact, you could. I don't like the idea of having to constantly convince people that piezo's will sound good - what they don't know won't hurt them!
Please post your pics when you are done. Thanks for the reply.
Cheers

Took some photos of my DR290's with the grills so you could see what they look like.

You can see here how I extended the horn braces to provide support to the grills:-

TCH Hardware will also do the same type of thing... I guess whichever is easier for you.
David... looks like I am not the only one who has thought of recessing a handle in the access port... lol Have just done the same sort of thing with my T30 slims... hopefully, another day or two until I can try the first one!!

5-6mm very low density speaker foam
This is the stuff:-
http://www.adamhall.com/uk/index.php?cc ... eaker+foam
The trick to glueing it I found is to spray the inner face of the grill with it face down on some paper. Remove the grill and that leaves the excess adhesive on hte paper. Once the adhesive has gone tacky apply the foam to the grill.
A very light oil (WD40 lubricant) on a rag can be used to remove any
excess adhesive that may have strayed onto the front of the grill.
