OT12 - T39 Combo

#1 Post by djohnson573 »

Believe it or not, this past weekend was the first time I have been to a venue where I could set up my entire rig of 4 – OT12s and 4-T39s V-plated and powered by a pair of Xti-2000s. Prior to this, I have tried on two separate occasions to RTA this set-up outside, but I’ve never made it to completion with the DRPA. Not sure yet what I’m doing wrong, but I’ll keep plugging away at it.

Anyway, the set-up was on an outside deck at a frat house for about 150 people. I spent some time trying to get it all dialed in by ear and finally got it to sound balanced to me. It was a parent’s weekend, so pre-game I played a mix of classic rock and current top 40, but kept it at conversational levels. After the game (Go Gators!), most of the parents left so I finally had the opportunity to stretch it out a bit.

With the gain structure I normally set, I have never had more than one LED light up on the master levels on my mixer. Given the go ahead by “Frat Dad”, I pushed the input sliders up to zero and turned the master to halfway. At this position, I had three LEDs on the master and the second LEDs on the XTIs going steady (I had previously measured 20 volts at 100 Hz and had three steady on the XTI).

All I can say is OMG! At concert level volume, the OT12s sounded incredible with good highs even way off axis and the Titans were producing chest compressing lows that rattled the deck. Clear, loud, and undistorted music across the spectrum. Even thought the system was barely out of idle, I have no idea how much power I was feeding the speakers and without a VM or hard wall limiter I was unwilling to press any further. I cannot, however, imagine needing more (or better) sound that what this set-up produced (and if I do, I’ll build more boxes). Thank you Bill for the opportunity to have an awesome system that even an old guy like me can carry. I still haven’t been able to wipe the grin off my face. :hyper:

Unfortunately no pics. I managed to tetris all 8 speakers, two 8U racks, speaker stands and cables in to a Honda CR-V. After that, I had room for either a camera or an iPod and chose the iPod. :D

If you can fit all that in a CR-V, that makes me optimistic in my transportation endeavors!

Joey, keep in mind that his T39 subs are each only 14" wide.

I might take that picture this evening as I haven't unpacked yet. It took three days to figure it all out, but if anyone has a CR-V, I will be happy to share the combination.

AHhhhhhh.....So I shouldn't be optimistic about fitting a pair of 30" wide T48s and two OT12s in there, huh?

Man, you and I have nearly identical systems (Though my Titans are 3012LF slims on xti4k). I like to play mine to their voltage limits, it sure is a brutal little system.

I have a CR-V and would absolutely love to see multiple pics of your CR-V loaded to the hilt like that. I don't know how the heck you managed to accomplish that.

I'm wondering how I'm going to fit two 24" T48s, two small Peavey PR12 tops, a 10U and an 8U rack, speaker stands and cables in mine. I just don't think it's possible. The CR-V is great for shopping/moving an armchair or two but it runs out of space really quickly and has no room at all unless you fold both rear seats down. That said; it's a Honda. Change the oil regularly and it will run forever. :hyper:

BTW: Your review/description was excellent. Wish you had pics though. :( How do you run two OT12's per side? Stacked? How?

It was dark before I got home, but I promise to post a picture at some point. In the meantime, here is a description:

1. Remove the headrests from the back seats.
2. Move the front seats far enought forward to squeeze a T39 on the floor bewteen the front and back seats.
3. Place two OT-12s on top of the T39.
4. Place a second T39 across the back seats.
5. From the rear, shove an OT12 down the middle to rest on the T39 in the back seat.
6. Place the final two T39s in the back cargo area with cables on either side.
7. The final OT12 and one 8U case will fit on top of the two T39s in back along with the speaker stands.
8. Final 8U case (and laptop) in the passenger seat.

Tight, but still have visibility in both side mirrors.

Yes, stacked on the speaker stand and tied together with ratcheting cargo straps.
