Breaking in speakers

#1 Post by Linas »

I am going to start my dual omni 10.5 build relativly soon and i have heard that new speakers need a break in period. What should i do and not do during this break in period? I want to try them out with my band ASAP, is this not recomended?

Bedding in drivers is pretty important. You drivers will bed in over a period of time if even if you do not do the following, just through use, but you may not get the most from your cabs until they do

I had two Eminence Delta lite drivers bedding in last night in my garage

This is what I did

Items required:-
Power amp
CD player with repeat track function
Simple Multimeter
CD with 30hz audio tone on it (or close to 30hz)
donwload one from here:-
http://binkster.net/extras.shtml#cd

1) Connect up your drivers to the power amp but keep them out of the boxes so they are just sat next to your amp (on some carpet) that way the speakers will make very little noise
2) Connect up your cd to the amp and start playing the 30hz tone with your cd set on track repeat
3) With the power amp gain(volume) turned down, turn the power amp on
4) Using the speaker terminals measure the AC voltage with your multimeter whilst slowly turning up the power amp until you are reading 8-12volts

Leave them working like this at least overnight.

On the lite side, a word of CAUTION for pet lovers!!! Certain pets can hear the lower frequencies, please take note, (this is just for fun thus you guys know I am not a pet lover nut job), soo... note the following!
As a side note, you can protect you varmits (pets), by placing ear plugs into their tiny ears to protect then during speaker break in process. The pets to be concerned about are........
Cows... they hear as low as 23 hz (and we thought cows were stupid!)
Ferretts. They hear as low as 16 hz!! ouch! (that's why they hate rap!)
Elephants! They hate rap even more ...16hz and those ears!!!!
Goldfish!!!! ...run and hide during speaker break in's...20hz hurts the gold fish ears.
If you want to drive rats nuts...set you rap sub crossovers to 200 hz. They love rap!! Thatz bee cuz thei doon-'t here well.... yo..yo ..
Tree frog's love 80's pop with the big kick sound... their little ears kick in at 50hz, just enough to catch some big hard kicking bottom end! Rock on Tree Frogs!!!!

I just gotta ask..."How do you know this to be true?"

Yeah, I was worried about my canary's ears. I couldn't find any earplugs that fit. Hell, I couldn't even find his ears. So, I just clamped his head in a vice. He didn't make a single sound through the entire break-in period.....

Daver, I have found the elusive and perplexing answers to life's mysteries with my amazing astounding Google skills. (gets better after 3 beers also). http://www.lsu.edu/deafness/deaf.htm
Then go to the frequencies link. All the true tested frequencies for varmits and critters. humans also.
As a side note, my decisions for the Titan 39 is as follows.
1 beer, Titan Slim 14" wide
2 beers, Titan 20" with Delta 12LF
3 beers, Titan 20" with Definimax 4012 HO
4 beers, Titan 24" wide with 2 x HL10C's
5 beres (burp), Titan 48" wide with 4 x HL10C'c
6 berss..... burp.. 4 x Titan 48" wide with 4 Definimax 4012HO loaded in some how... with a 2000 watt power amp for each..burp...
7th beer, no 7th beer. In bed asleep before reaching #7.

Fortunately my work shop is a few doors down, so my Guinea Pigs, Fish and Budgie will be ok...... THank heavens.

The people that live in the rental house always know I'm up to something. I get that.... WHAT THE HELL WAS THAT AT 1AM????

Um......... 50Hz I do believe!
